The PBS KIDS Sprout network has fired the host of “The Good Night Show” upon learning that she appeared seven years ago in videos called “Technical Virgin,” which dealt satirically with anal sex and masturbation. PBS’s president said the videos “undermine [the host’s] credibility with our audience.”

  • CNN:

The PBS Kids Sprout network has fired the host of “The Good Night Show” after learning she had appeared in videos called “Technical Virgin.”

The host, Melanie Martinez, had alerted network officials about one of the videos late last week and she was immediately taken off the air.

“PBS Kids Sprout has determined that the dialogue in this video is inappropriate for her role as a preschool program host and may undermine her character’s credibility with our audience,” said Sandy Wax, network president.

You’d think PBS would be beyond this sort of thing. Why, why can’t they be? If this were a more mainstream children’s program, given the infantile state of popular culture and media, I could see where this would become a media event, subsequently splashed all over Entertainment Tonight and similar-themed programs.

Do I need to give the example of Paul Reubens? He simply had a life outside his television character, and his career took a strong hit. (Beware of offending CBS’ corporate image).

Why can’t PBS take the thoughtful road, and acknoweledge Miss Martinez had a life before she became the host of this show, and simply go on?

Lemme see. What do you think the chances are that a CHILD would have access to “Technical Virgin?” Right, NONE.

And even if a child somewhere, for some unfathomable reason, was to actually SEE something of a sexual nature, how, exactly is this experience going to impact him/her negatively? Right, it’s NOT.

As we used to say when working with mentally handicapped folk… ALL THE RETARDATION ISN’T IN THE CLIENTS!

PBS network president, Sandy Wax, with the view that “the videos “undermine [the host’s] credibility with our audience”” is only demonstrating the profound lack of maturity and courage that seems to have infected both our corporate and political leadership.

Grow up, Sandy… and allow “your audience” to do so as well. The only “undermining of credibility” done by this immature action is your own.

Somehow, I doubt she would be promoting similar videos to the four year olds. Lighten up, PBS.

    And they are funny.
