Eye Test Detects Alzheimer?s

Science/Medicine: Detecting Alzheimer?s in the future could be as simple as giving an eye test.  Doctors in Boston are testing a method using a pulse of infrared light that has been successful in mice.  While the stem cell debate rages on and patients continue to hope for a cure, early detection hints at the potential to fight this disease.

The test, developed by a team led by Dr Lee Goldstein, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, uses a non-invasive laser to study the lens of the eye.  It checks for deposits of beta-amyloid—the protein found in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The procedure has worked in a trial in mice, a conference in Spain heard.
