Iraqi PM Condemns Israel

In yet another awkward turn of events for the Bush administration, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki denounced Israel’s actions in Lebanon. While Bush has condoned Israel’s recent military incursion, the man he embraced during his trip to Iraq moved closer to being in step with Iran on Wednesday.

“I condemn these aggressions and call on the Arab League foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo to take quick action to stop these aggressions. We call on the world to take quick stands to stop the Israeli aggression.”

The notion that invading Iraq would somehow be good for Israel appears ever more farcical with each twist in this unfortunate tale.

The New York Times:

BAGHDAD, Iraq, July 19—Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki of Iraq on Wednesday forcefully denounced the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, marking a sharp break with President Bush’s position and highlighting the growing power of a Shiite Muslim identity across the Middle East.

“The Israeli attacks and airstrikes are completely destroying Lebanon’s infrastructure,” Mr. Maliki said at an afternoon news conference inside the fortified Green Zone, which houses the American Embassy and the seat of the Iraqi government. “I condemn these aggressions and call on the Arab League foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo to take quick action to stop these aggressions. We call on the world to take quick stands to stop the Israeli aggression.”

The American Embassy did not provide an immediate response.

As the Iraqi prime minister is a member in good standing of al-Daw’a Islamiyya, this is no surprise. Al-Daw’a is very close to Hizballah and some even believe that it assisted in its establishment.

Those of the Iraqi Arabs who have cooperated most with the Americans, the Shi’ites of Iraq, are surely to punish American troops for American support for this Israeli attack.

The neocons and supporters of the Israeli attack are already boasting that they are reaping a reward for the invasion of Iraq; that is, by inciting a civil war in Iraq and assisting the establishment of Shi’ite power there, they are getting Sunni Arab governments to back Israel against other Shi’ites.

the people of iraq are getting fuller news of what’s going on in lebanon than americans are—americans will be the last to know, not that americans have any say concerning where their taxes go
