U.S. to Allow Israel Another Week of Bombing in Lebanon

That’s apparently the consensus emerging from the two countries; Israel would be given a week to further weaken Hezbollah, at which point Condoleezza Rice would travel to the region and try to establish a buffer zone.

Strange, to be hearing about such plans in advance.

  • Meanwhile, the first Israeli ground troops have entered Lebanon.

  • N.Y. Times:

WASHINGTON, July 18 ? The outlines of an American-Israeli consensus began to emerge on Tuesday in which Israel would continue to bombard Lebanon for about another week to degrade the capabilities of the Hezbollah militia, officials of the two countries said.

Then, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would go to the region and seek to establish a buffer zone in southern Lebanon and perhaps an international force to monitor Lebanon?s borders to prevent Hezbollah from obtaining more rockets with which to bombard Israel.

American officials signaled that Ms. Rice was waiting at least a few more days before wading into the conflict, in part to give Israel more time to weaken Hezbollah forces.

The strategy carries risk, partly because it remains unclear just how long the rest of the world, particularly America?s Arab allies, will continue to stay silent as the toll on Lebanese civilians rises.

After reading Bill Maher’s Huffington Post article in which he joins with Bush to celebrate Israel’s wanton slaughter of Lebanese and the methodical destruction of their country’s infrastructure, the aforegoing comments by Greg Bacon, Mark, C Woof, Tweets and Choukeir are reassuring. To anyone whose humanitarian impulses our government has not yet managed to stiffle, this much is self-evident:

    * Vis-a-vis the Palestinians and Lebanese Israel is a fascist state pure and simple, as condemnable in that regard as Nazi Germany was re Jews. At the time of its birth in 1948 Israel had a mere 8% of its present territory, territory it has consistently employed the most brutal methods to acquire, torturing and killing Palestinians, imprisoning them for decades by the tens-of-thousands, sans any legal charges or any legal recourse.

    * The majority of Israel’s top politicians are guided by an ideological paradigm which Hitler-reincarnated-as-a Jew might have devised; a paradigm which posits that through Abraham God gave Jews most of the Middle East, including the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and even part of Turkey.

    * At present, Israel is killing hundreds of non-combatants and destroying the lives of tens-of-thousands of others, all in the name of securing freedom for a couple captured Israeli soldiers. In doing so, it declares each soldier’s life is worth more than the lives of hundreds of Lebanese, including women and children.

    * It is presently starving and denying all medical care to a million plus Palestinians living in Gaza, while taking their democratically elected representatives prisoner and murdering those who dare to stand and fight.

    * If Palestinians who strike back, including those in Hamas and Hizbullah, are to be condemned, so, too, are the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto who carried out an uprising.

    * Iran and Syria have without doubt helped arm the Palestinians. But when compared with the tens-of-billions of dollars worth of the most modern and sophisticated planes, guns and bombs the U.S. has furnished/continues to furnish Israel, all completely free of charge, Iran and Syria’s aid is akin to providing bb-guns to use against howitzers; bb-guns wielded by an oppressed population against a hard-hearted and heavy-handed oppressor.

Terrorists?  An Irish friend recently reminded me of Dylan Thomas’ definition: “The terrorists are the ones with small bombs.”

c woof asks “Is the entire world insane?”

No… not the entire world… just those who in any way benefit from the insanity… military/industrial complex, politicians of all stripes, bureaucrats, infrastructure materials manufacturers, contractors, builders, and so on. War is BUSINESS… the bigger the war, the bigger the business!

There are millions who are not insane. These folk truly believe that all living things have a right to exist & coexist on this planet and live their lives accordingly… the only “power” they have interest in is POWER WITH not POWER OVER.

    So far the score is:

    POWER WITH folks…. zip
POWER OVER folks…. all the marbles

Somewhere there tens of thousands beside themselves with GLEE when they count their profits from another week of bombs & missiles going “boom” and all they destroy. Depressing, ain’t it.

Israel’s use of the “BLITZKRIEG” war tactics—first, heavy aerial bombardment, then massive shelling by artillery and tanks and finally, a major push using overwhelming infantry forces—against the hapless civilans in both Gaza and Lebanon, was first used and refined by the Nazis in WW II.

It’s a bit ironic that Israel, who never misses a chance to blame the world and sow guilt for what happened during WW II, uses the same military tactics that the Wehrmacht employed to success 65 years ago.

Way to go Israel! You’ve already turned the West Bank and Gaza into concentration camps with your so-called “security fence.”
Now, instead of using gas chambers for your “FINAL SOLUTION” of dealing with the Palestinians, you use F-16’s and 155 mm artillery shells, white phosphorous and cluster bombs.
Israel must have forgot the old saying, “Choose your enemies well.”

Gee, do they really need another week? Is there another Catholic Hospital, Greek Orthodox Church, milk factory, or electric power plant that they haven’t yet taken out with their “precision bombing”?

Perhaps the bombing can only stop when the entire Lebanese economy is irretrievably obliterated and all survivors are homeless?

Or maybe it will take another week to make sure that every single one of the millions of Lebanese Shiites (every one of whom is of course a terrorist Hezbollah fighter) is dead?

I fail to understand why the entire world, with the obvious exception of the Lebanese, feels it is ok to murder Lebanese (and anyone else in Lebanon—witness the Canadian family killed a couple of days ago) and bomb the hell out of Lebanon. Is the entire world insane?
As the Israeli protesters noted, the kill ratio is 10 to 1; and bombing the crap out of the infrastructure of Lebanon, sending what was a promising democracy back to the stone age in order to retreive 2 Israelis while Israel holds 10,000 prisoners on its own soil is… I don’t even know what that is.

A further week to kill more civilians since all the IDF was able to achieve regarding Hesballah was to kill a technician in the Al Manar TV station that belongs to Hesballah.  Not one Hesballah fighter has been killed so far.  220 civilians have been killed till now.
