Paper Drops Coulter’s Column

An editor at the Cedar Rapids Gazette said that conservative readers felt she was misrepresenting their views.
May a thousand newspapers follow suit.

Editor & Publisher:

Ann Coulter is no stranger to controversy, but her latest adventures have several newspapers questioning whether carrying her syndicated column is worth the trouble. The Shreveport (La.) Times is currently leaving the decision of whether or not to keep Coulter up to its readers. But the first newspaper to officially drop Coulter’s column since the latest uproar began seems to be The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she had appeared for about 14 months.

Opinion Page Editor Doug Neumann told E&P, “Our decision was made before the plagiarism allegations. It did come after the publication of [Coulter’s] book, but I would say it didn’t directly play any role on our decision.”

The only problem I ever had with Ann Coulter’s sputtering is that she gets paid to have it printed on the Op-Ed page.  Without putting to fine a point on it, Ms. Coulter is very poor writer and shameless self-promoter.  She misrepresents her opinion as self-evident truth and consistently advances ad-hominem attacks as arguments for her point of view.  The tone of her writing is shrill and strident. Rather than address these defects in style and substance, she seems compelled to lift other peoples stuff without credit.  Quite frankly, when all is considered, she should pay, by the word, to be printed in the Want Ads.
