Truthdigger of the Week: Rep. Peter Hoekstra

Rep. Peter Hoekstra
From Crooks and Liars

Rep. Peter Hoekstra defends his letter to Bush on Fox News July 9.

Truthdig salutes Rep. Peter Hoekstra, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who rapped Bush in a letter for not briefing Congress on various intelligence-gathering programs. Check out a video of Hoekstra publicly defending the letter on Fox News: “It is not optional for this president ... or people in the executive community not to keep the intelligence committees fully informed of what they are doing.”

It’s refreshing to hear a Republican give praise to whistle-blowers (see the video and the quote below). Usually the GOP tries to shoot the messenger.

It’s also encouraging to see Republicans publicly scolding the president for his secret intelligence-gathering activities—even though we’d like to see them go further and call them outright illegal. We’re convinced by Glenn Greenwald’s arguments that in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Guantanamo decision, Bush’s programs are patently outside the law.

Crooks and Liars:

Hoekstra: …this is actually a case where the whistleblower process was working appropriately. Some people within the intelligence community brought to my attention some programs that they believed we had not been briefed on.  They were right. We have now been briefed on those programs, but I wanted to reinforce to the President and to the executive branch in the intelligence community how important and by law–the requirement that they keep the legislative branch informed of what they are doing.

Wallace: Chairman, the President always says in these cases that congressional leaders– including you, as the chairman of the House intelligence–are briefed. How do you explain this failure and how serious do you take it?

Hoekstra: Well, I take it very, very seriously otherwise I would not have written the letter to the President.

Alas- We’ve been waiting for the IMF to bring out the “financial collapse” stick.  Its a big stick and Geithner is wielding it with joy.  “Increase” debt ceiling or else.  Did you ever get the feeling you were being robbed?

I stumbled across your blog while I was in the process of doing some online research. I agree with you that it is refreshing to hear a Republican openly supporting a whistleblower when, too often, the Republicans are the first to criticize such a stand.

ALL SOUND AND FURY…SIGNIFYING NOTHING.

So much blustering, so much bullsh*t.  We all know by now that this Congress will do absolutely NOTHING to Bush.

As a matter of fact, it will go out of it’s way to make what he did fit the law.  If not, they’ll change the law…retroactively.

NONE of the Republicans in Congress has the backbone of the Nixon Republicans who truly believed in the Constitution and separation of powers.

Take a look at Hoekstra’s top campaign donors and you’ll see why he’s pushing to nail Iraq for WMD.

3 General Dynamics $10,000
8 Northrop Grumman $8,250
9 Boeing Co $7,000
12 Lockheed Martin $6,500
13 Raytheon Co $6,000

The man has made a living taking money from the weapons industry. His money will keep pouring as long as there are GI’s fighting in Iraq.

This is from the Christian Monitor about the Hoekstra letter pointing to a secret organization within the government that could organize illegal intelligence operations like this.

“Conservative blogger Tom Maguire, in his blog JustOneMinute, says
there was a fairly significant passage in Hoekstra’s letter that
largely ignored by the media – that the chairman believes that there
is a “a strong and well-positioned group within the Agency
intentionally undermining the administration and its policies.”
Hoekstra’s letter indicates that he is concerned about the appointment
of Steve Kappes as deputy director of the CIA, as Hoekstra says Mr.
Kappes may have been a part of this group.”

As a firm 9/11 conspiracy beliver, I think this same organization with links to the CIA could be the mysterious agency that helped plan and carry out the destruction of the three world trade centers.  Nevertheless it is a scary idea that even Republican Congressmen aren’t allowed to know about intelligence operations being carried out by the executive office.

Also, doesn’t the idea of spying on people with sattelites eerily remind you of the movie Enemy of the State?

“Hoekstra’s Threat”
by emptywheel

“...Hoekstra is one of the nut-jobs trying to claim outdated munitions are proof that Iraq had WMDs. As the Lichtblau-Shane article explains, Hoekstra was quite upset that Death Squads Negroponte pooped on his party and admitted the munitions find was absolutely worthless.

“... Politicization, to Peter Hoekstra, is anything that undermines attempts to disinform the public about justifications for the Iraq war.

“Remember, Hoekstra is the guy who championed the database of “Iraqi” documents, which is largely another attempt to create a false connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq, another attempt to claim there were WMDs when there were none.

” ...And, Hoekstra accompanied nut-job extraordinaire Curt Weldon to his meeting with Fereidoun Mahdavi which Weldon later used to make incendiary claims about Iran. Hoekstra isn’t in the business of ensuring we get sound intelligence. He’s in the business of disinformation.”
