While the GOP Frets Over Nonexistent Flag Burning…

A brutal dictator in North Korea threatens our country with an “annihilating strike and a nuclear war” in response to America’s rhetoric over N. Korea’s possible missile launch (which was probably a hoax anyway).

  • Keep in mind that Sen. Orrin Hatch said that passing the flag-burning amendment was “the most important thing the Senate could be doing.” Good to know the Republicans really have their eye on the ball.

    AP:

North Korea will respond to a pre-emptive U.S. military attack with an “annihilating strike and a nuclear war,” the state-run media said Monday, heightening its antagonistic rhetoric.

The Korean Central News Agency, citing an unidentified Rodong Sinmun newspaper “analyst,” accused the United States of increasing military pressure on the isolated communist state.

The North Korean threat of retaliation, which is often voiced by its state-controlled media, comes amid U.S. official reports that Pyongyang has shown signs of preparing for a test of a long-range missile.

I support the defeat of a constitutional amendment that would make it illegal to burn the American flag. I don’t like to see things wasted by deliberately destroying them in any manner, material objects that are only going to be replaced anyway. But if you choose to buy a flag with your own money and burn it, that’s your business, not mine or anyone else’s. As long as the fire doesn’t endanger anyone or harm anything that belongs to someone other than the one burning his own flag. I’m a loyal, patriotic American citizen; I revere the laws of this nation, especially the Constitution. I honor what the flag represents but the flag itself is an icon made of cloth and although its design is a reminder of the values of our country, the flag is nothing but an idol and I am not an idol worshiper. My reverence is for the principles, the concepts intended to result in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I value a nation that protects its people not just from an outside source of danger but from its own encroachment on individuality and a citizen’s right to express his own perspective. If one cares to do it by purchasing a flag and destroying it, he is wasting his own money. Yes, he’s doing it as a symbolic act of hostility and disrespect for something, maybe even everything going on in America. I do it at the ballot box while another may want to do it by burning a piece of fabric. I do not favor legislation that forbids it.

Mr. Hatch’s reasoning is quite sound.  An act of flag burning by an American will immediately embolden the maniacal leader of North Korea to launch a nuclear war on America.
