Pentagon Says Homosexuality No Longer a Disorder

The U.S. military said it would revise an official medical document that classified homosexuality as a disorder alongside mental retardation, impulse control disorders and personality disorders.

  • Original story

  • Reuters:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon no longer deems homosexuality a mental disorder, officials said on Wednesday, although the reversal has no impact on U.S. policy prohibiting openly gay people from serving in the military.

After a 1996 Pentagon document placing homosexuality among a list of “certain mental disorders” came to light this month, the American Psychiatric Association and a handful of lawmakers asked the Defense Department to change its view.

The Pentagon said in a statement: “Homosexuality should not have been characterized as a mental disorder in an appendix of a procedural instruction. A clarification will be issued over the next few days.”

A long-held strategy that the U.S. military would like to remain under the radar, this continued “misclassification” of homosexuality furthers the entrenched mindset that queer people are “less” than fully functioning (and taxpaying as mr. puglia points out) members of this country.  It is a deplorably subversive tactic by the Pentagon to suggest that those who are more adept can trounce those who supposedly are not.

These same mindsets, the ones that train enlistees on how to kill the ones who are different, the ones who don’t love in the legislated way, are the very ones who propagate violence on queer people every day.  Oh, they will deny it, but when cornered it’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” on their bigotry and hatred for fellow citizens and enlistees.  Just ask my friend who was beaten and broken in the streets two weeks ago here in New York City. Oh, wait, it’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” isn’t it?

Declaring love and partnership between two (or more) citizens a “mental disorder” is not only archaic, it is akin to calling steam from one kettle “retarded” because of the kettle from which it came and the air into which it is floating.

as a homosexual taxpayer, it is my determination that the pentagon is a petri dish of mental disorder. the famously quintefarious booby hatch is teeming with impulse control (iraq, iran, euphrasia- is that right, did i say that right, baby?) and personality disorder (the three faces of evil rumsfeld). gentlemen! you can’t fight in here, this is the war room.

    Clarification?

The stance does not need to be clarified. It needs to be removed completely.

One wonders, though, if it would have been “clarified” if it had not been noticed and publicised.
