Arnold Schwarzenegger and President Bush

The governor rejected a request from the president to send 1,500 more National Guard troops to the Mexican border, saying the transfer would stretch the California Guard too thin.

AP:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger this week rejected a request from the Bush administration to send an additional 1,500 National Guard troops to the Mexican border, the governor’s office confirmed Friday.

The National Guard Bureau, an arm of the Pentagon, asked for the troops to help with the border-patrol mission in New Mexico and Arizona, but Schwarzenegger said the request would stretch the California Guard too thin in case of an emergency or natural disaster.

Schwarzenegger spokesman Adam Mendelsohn confirmed the governor’s decision Friday after two California National Guard officials revealed it to The Associated Press.

The reason for Arnold’s refusal is two fold.  First, his resources are genuinely stretched thin by the deployment of National Guard troops to Iraq.  The political reason is that Arnold is way too afraid to be seen as even coming close to advocating anything the President does because of his extremely low poll numbers.  Arnold is a smart cookie, he moves 1500 troops to the border and it effects his Hispanic vote come reelection time in a negative way.  He can justify it under the auspices of stretched resources, and that’s legitimate, however, if he was the Governor of Montanna instead he may have found a way to make it happen.  How many rats are going to jump ship in the Republican party before someone realizes that the ship’s on fire.

Sure, it’s politics - it’s about who’s gonna fund the paychecks of the Nat’l Guard???  Feds aren’t - Shrub has already told Kallifornia they’re on they’re own (when he thought the ‘mike’ was off).

The Feds have cut 50% of the Federal Parks Rangers budget this summer, across the country.  Next they’ll be for sale to the highest bid from outta the country ‘cause we’re too broke to take care of our treasured lands.

Kallifornians are taxed to the max - it’s gonna be a hot, shakey E-ticket trip to Nov. ‘o6.

Arnold may have started as an athlete, but he has learned well every craft he has turned his hand to. Now he`s running like Hell away from an unpopular president, like any good politico would. This one for movie fans. Hey, Governor, what did you do with Bush? `I let him go.`
