GOP Senators Kill Minimum Wage Boost

Not even a week after the Congress voted itself a pay raise, the not-so-compassionate conservatives in the Senate voted down any bump in the $5.15 national minimum wage.

AP:

The Republican-controlled Senate smothered a proposed election-year increase in the minimum wage Wednesday, rejecting Democratic claims that it was past time to boost the $5.15 hourly pay floor that has been in effect for nearly a decade.

The 52-46 vote was eight short of the 60 needed for approval under budget rules and came one day after House Republican leaders made clear they do not intend to allow a vote on the issue, fearing it might pass.

The Senate vote marked the ninth time since 1997 that Democrats there have proposed — and Republicans have blocked — a stand-alone increase in the minimum wage. The debate fell along predictable lines.

That is ridiculous.  The GOP is totally controlled by big corporations.  They all claim to support an increase but then they do nothing about it.  I was just at http://www.wakeupwalmart.com and they have some intense facts pointing at the fact that walmart is basically controlling us policy since they are financing the GOP officials.

Gee, in the UK minimum rate is £5.05 per hour (about $8.85), though this is for adults over the age of 22. 18-21 year olds get £4.35 per hour(about $7.45). Seems like the US is losing ground, a country that can no longer claim that it’s middle class earn more that those in Europe. (I’m an expat who longer sees any value in calling himself an American)

Through their vote against raising the minimum wage while giving themselves a raise, republicans have verified their opposition to the working population. I hope as the next election draws hear the democrats will notice this.
