Negotiators for the J. Paul Getty Museum are meeting with Italian authorities to discuss the return of antiquities that Italy claims were stolen. For years Italian authorities have accused American museums of purchasing stolen art. Also, in New York, a former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art faces charges of “knowingly buying stolen art.”

Getty and Italians in meetings over antiquities dispute

Associated Press

ROME - Negotiators with the J. Paul Getty Museum met with Italian officials in Rome on Tuesday for a second day of discussions on a possible deal to return artifacts the Italians claim were illegally smuggled out of the country.

Legal experts, archaeologists and administrators from the Getty and Italy’s Culture Ministry declined to comment to reporters as they filed into the meeting.

Tuesday’s talks followed a full day of discussions Monday that participants, including Getty Director Michael Brand, described as “good meetings” and a step forward. Brand did not attend Tuesday’s session.
