Religious Right Seeking to Ban Gay Marriage Without Congress

An anti-gay-marriage protester stands vigil outside the Multnomah Building on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Portland, Ore.

In the wake of the marriage ban’s failure in the Senate, conservative Christian leaders are discussing an unprecedented--although apparently legal--maneuver to amend the Constitution without congressional approval.

Think Progress:

Religious Right Seeks Unprecedented Constitutional Convention To Ban Gay Marriage Without Congress

Earlier this month, efforts to ban gay marriage by amending the Constitution failed badly in Senate. Now the religious right is considering appealing to state legislatures to call a Constitutional Convention under an obscure provision of Article 5 that would allow amendments to the Constitution without congressional approval. The Evans-Novak report has the details:

Meeting after the big failure at the offices of the social-conservative Family Research Council, the top leaders of the marriage movement — Catholic, Protestant and Mormon leaders among others — discussed the possibility of an unprecedented Constitutional Convention. Two-thirds (34) of the state legislatures would have to call for such a convention — which could be done only with great difficulty. Even then, no one knows what such a convention would look like or what sort of amendments could result from it.

We progressives should back a constitutional convention.  Not for banning same sex marriage, but to come up with a form of government that’s truly of, for and by the people, since we’ll then be ablt to put direct democracy on the table (with good riddence to our politicos), since it’s rendered feasable now (details to be worked out) by the Internet.  Once we have direct democray; goodbye Capitalism, welcome liberty, justice and equality for all.

I’m always amused by those persons who claim, “We don’t hate the sinner, we just hate the SIN! We are motivated only by Christian love and concern.”

TO WHIT:
Gay people must not be protected from job discrimination.
Gay people must not be allowed to adopt children.
Gay people must be barred from serving in the military or joining the Boy Scouts.
Gay people must not be protected under existing hate crimes statutes.
Gay couples must not be allowed to file joint tax returns.
Gay couples must not be allowed to declare one another beneficiaries under Social Security.
Gay people ought not to be teaching in public schools.
Gay couples must not be allowed to marry.
Gay relationships, no matter how long-term or monogamous, are absolutely OUT OF THE QUESTION.

But remember:
“IT’S ONLY BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU!”

Yeah, right.

If marriage is really such a sacrament between a man and a woman, let’s ban divorce.  Too many of our families are being torn apart by this institution, and it’s time we look squarely at the issues raised by divorce, and the risks the family faces.

Wow!  As a homosexual, I am constantly surprised to see, as a suppressed minority, what extraordinary powers we have in the U.S.A.  We have the power to destroy male/female marriage simply by saying “I do”. The very mention of our sexual identity is enough to crumble the esprit d’corps of a military fighting unit.  And now the very thought of extending equal rights to us through union is enough to call a Constitutional Convention.  When was the last time such an event happened?!  I am almost humbled by the power the fundamentalist-religious-right-wing and their political minions confer on us same-sex-attracted men and women.  I had no idea of the potent status my sexual orientation could bring to the great American table.  That must be why in so many cultures we were chosen for the priestly class.  Before you know it I am going to expect people to hold doors open for me, to defer to me in lines & crowds and if to not bow outright at least incline their head a little as I pass.

It’s my wish that all those of fanatical, religious, fundamentalist persuasion get exactly what they deserve… to waste tens of thousands of hours of their lives working feverishly on a completely losing cause that VERY FEW GIVE A RAT’S ASS ABOUT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Only those holier-than-thou perverted hypocrits give a damn about the loves and lives of others. The entire bunch of them couldn’t muster enough brains to blow their collective brown noses!

So let ‘em be. Let ‘em blow their lives and budgets in pursuit of the silliest, stupidest and most small-minded of endeavors… trying to tell others how to live their lives. What hubris!

Keep in mind that these people have simply been mislead. The Bible teaches these hateful ideas, and they steadfastly follow it. They are no less wrong for treating their fellow man in such ways, but they are not stupid. Just ignorant.
For example, if a four year old was taught at school that 2 + 2 = 5 by a teacher, blame would be placed on the teacher for teaching wrong. Not the child.

a constitutional convention cannot ratify anything. ratification requires 75% of the country to agree. the media corporations are using this tactic to scare americans away from holding an article v convention under the guise that the right is pushing to ban gay marriage. the right nor the left can do anything at a convention except propose ideas. that’s it. we have nothing to fear from a convention (and at this point, everything to gain), and we should use the religious right’s push as a trojan horse. please visit the site to get more info: http://www.cc2.org

Bigotry which hides behind Religion is no less reprehensible than other forms of bigotry.  We are being flooded with hateful propoganda filled with lies from the Religious Right just as the Germans were flooded with hateful propoganda filled with lies before World War II. It’s amazing how horrible humans can treat one another professing to be acting on the command of God.

How stupid and small-minded.  Christians will stop at nothing to continue their 21st C. inquisition.  While they can’t burn the gays at the stake, they’re sure sparing no effort to make the lives of gays as difficult and hellish as possible.

Why are they doing this again?  Oh, yeah: Love.

Somehow, it appears more power and control than love, but that could be me.

Wow.  These people really are stupid.  It’s a wonder they even remember to breathe or eat.
