Marine’s Lawyer: Haditha Killings Were Lawful

A lawyer for a Marine involved in the Haditha massacre said his client had followed military rules of engagement.

AP:

The lawyer for a Marine being investigated in the deaths of two dozen civilians in Haditha, Iraq, described the event as “tragic,” but denied innocent people were killed intentionally and said troops followed military rules of engagement.

No one has been charged in the Haditha case, which centers on allegations that a small number of Marines from Camp Pendleton’s 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment killed 24 Iraqi civilians, including unarmed women and children, on Nov. 19 after a roadside bomb killed a fellow Marine.

Lawyer Neal A. Puckett said Sunday that Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich, 26, told him several civilians were killed after the bombing when his squad pursued insurgents firing at them from inside a house.

Puckett quoted the sergeant as describing a house-to-house search that went wrong and resulted in unintended civilian deaths. Wuterich denied allegations of an intentional massacre, Puckett said.

Allegations surrounding the battle for Fallujah point to it being the incubator for the rules of engagement that led directly to the incident at Haditha.

The PR generals who stand up and say with a straight face that the miltary investigates every allegation are not telling the truth ... I don’t even think they are telling the truth as they know it. What’s that? Lying?

When we investigate what the soldiers have descibed as a “turkey shoot” in Fallujah, where women and children were killed by sniper fire ... then maybe we can begin to try to establish some honrable credibility for the field commanders and their Pentagon cohorts.

These guys sound like junior high jocks: “Gotta support the team even if we play dirty to win.” Even when they almost always win the league championship.

And in this situation, it’s a part of why we are losing. How big a part? I don’t know. But it seems to be turning most of the world against us.

(sigh) When will civilians be considered humans, as opposed to ‘collateral damage’?  The massacre could be evidence of troop morale being pushed over the limit.  Everyone’s a possible hostile, shoot first and ask questions later.  What happened to standards and protocol?  To honor? Whatever the case for the Marines responsible, innocent lives are gone, and the survivors altered for life.  With discrepencies in accounts, who’s to be believed?  As Americans, it’s important to deplore this horror, whether accidental or not, and those responsible must be held accountable...and I’m loathe to admit that promotion sounds fishy, but I’m not versed in military rank, so it could probably have been already in motion before this.
