Salon writer Rebecca Traister sounds off on new “Orwellian” federal guidelines that treat all women as pre-pregnant—regardless of whether or not they plan on being so any time soon. “Healthcare authorities,” she writes, are “letting you know why your health as a woman really matters”—i.e. as baby incubators.
Salon:
Want to get really freaked out? Check out the first paragraph of today’s Washington Post story “Forever Pregnant,” which explains that new federal guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ask “all females capable of conceiving a baby to treat themselves—and to be treated by the health care system—as pre-pregnant, regardless of whether they plan to get pregnant anytime soon.”
Pause. Breathe. OK. What?
Apparently, all women “between first menstrual period and menopause” are now supposed to take supplements of folic acid, refrain from smoking, maintain a healthy weight and watch chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. Other recommendations, mentioned lower down in the Post piece, are that women stay away from cat feces and “discuss the danger alcohol poses to a developing fetus.”
Why stop there? What about avoiding sushi, uncooked meats and unpasteurized cheeses? Perhaps women should only be allowed on planes once it has been determined, by routine pelvic exams administered at the gate, that they are not carrying a fetus that could experience trauma midflight.
What’s this all about? According to the Post, “experts say it’s important that women follow this advice throughout their reproductive lives, because about half of pregnancies are unplanned and so much damage can be done to a fetus between conception and the time the pregnancy is confirmed.” So even when we’re not pregnant, or have no intention of becoming pregnant, or have already been pregnant and are done having babies, we should make our theoretically possible but wholly imaginary fetuses our priorities.

Bearing in mind domestic, four-legged cows do
Report thisnot live very long, and women outlive men, what I
am going to say will probably outrage most girls and women, but hear ne out first. Since
girls in their teens and twenties have mammary glands capable of producing milk, why don’t they let themselves be milked at home either by hand or by using a milking machine? Before I get lynched, I would like to point out that milking a
girl could (a) save her parents money so they did
not have to go out to buy milk, and (b)make the
girl more independent.

Um, Druthers, this is the “Homeland”. Totally different than the “Fatherland.” Please get that straight or I’ll have the S.S. kick your door in. And by S.S. I mean Secret Service, if you were confused.

As a woman, may I say: CALM DOWN. Our goverment is considering GUIDELINES to help women be more healthy. You’re free to ignore them, just as we have always been. I don’t understand the outrage that someone would suggest to us to be a healthier person. Who cares about some baby that might never come?! What about yourself? Don’t you care about your own health?

Perhaps this stems from the “Death of the West” fear that people like Pat Buchanan writes books about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_the_West
Or is similar to the insanity that drives Fox News’ John Gibson who says that “White people need to make more babies”:

Colbert ripped Gibson a new one over his “babies” crap. I think the link to it is here but I don’t do Flash:

The Matrix is Loading
You thought the Matrix in which we all live in pods of goo and only think we are running around all over town and with our friends was done by some virtual intelligence machine. Oh no my friend!
It is being done by the self-righteous right. First no fertilized egg will be wasted (leave no conception behind) and then it will be the egg and the sperm. There is only one way to insure proper prepregnancy behavior will occur: institutionalization.
When young people go through puberty, they will be sent to institutions to insure no egg or sperm is wasted. They will be harvested. Boys will be milked like cows to suck out every sperm before it can be wasted in some sock or paper towel, or heaven forbid, some sex act with another person. Eggs will be removed from girls as they are produced. They will be allowed to leave to go to church, only.
When a woman becomes pregnant, all manner of probes and monitoring devices will be shoved up into her to insure the fetus is maturing properly. There will be no exceptions. There will be no discrimination, all will have to go.
It’s the new order. First the brain dead like Terry Shiavo and then the unborn and then the unconceived.

By the same token we should encourage alcoholism among men because statiscally alcoholics sire more geniuses than their sober counterparts. And why let pre-pubescent girls off the hook. Strict diet and exercise regimens along with daily lessons in chastity and obedience to the Decider must begin by the age of three. Not all little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice.

Not unexpected; not surprising. Why get outraged now? Just another step in the road to totalitarianism.
Women, get ready to be nice, compliant, smiling, helpful 50s housewives. And make sure you have a good prescription for Paxil, Mrs. Robinson.
