From the Washington Post

The show that allowed us to feel idealistic about politics—if only for an hour a week—is signing off forever. Check out this interactive application full of fun facts about the cast and crew of the fictional administration that we desperately wished had been running the country for the last five years.

Washington Post:

C.J., Josh, Toby, Sam - the men and women of TV’s “West Wing” arrived in 1999, and Washington greeted them like rock stars. We tried to elbow into their entourage; we yearned to get inside their faux-D.C. bubble. We even managed to make it a bipartisan event.

Rep. Tom DeLay crowed about plans to add a House majority whip to the cast. Madeleine Albright made a late-night visit to a taping in Georgetown. Alan Greenspan professed his addiction to the program. And Mayor Anthony Williams managed to get his name linked to “The West Wing” by announcing that the show had “pumped $2.6 million into the local economy” in its first season.

Even the First Fan (then-President Bill Clinton) was compelled to summon series creator Aaron Sorkin to the White House.

HELP….I was on the Freedom of the Seas and missed the final episode of West Wing.  Sat down to watch it and I apparently taped the wrong channel.  Anybody tape it???

And it left with such a… WHIMPER. It’s a shame that they did not, in the end, stand for anything. Not that they should have been PRO Iraq or ANTI Bush or anything like that, but why not at least one really well-written inaugural speech.

I am glad it’s gone. That show gave too much credence to MSNBC and Drudge and other “real” journalism outlets (not as in “real journalism” but as in “really” existing). Promoting commercial products is almost expected these days, but promoting people like Drudge, Mathews and Russert? Gag!

Besides, the show’s dialog was usually really hard to believe—nobody talks like those West-Wingers did, nobody.

This show was a breath of fresh air; characters were believable and painted the Republicans with a very realistic brush. I’m really going to miss this bunch. It helped to put a personal face on our leaders, even if it was fiction.

I will miss this show more than I will miss many of the people I’ve ever known!
