Did President Bush decide to address the nation on immigration as a way of distracting attention from his administration’s NSA phone record collection program? Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman starred in “Wag the Dog,” a movie about an attention-shifting ploy by a troubled White House.
President Bush will deliver a rare (for him) television address, a Monday night talk on immigration reform.
Is it too cynical to ask whether he’s wagging the dog to distract attention from the NSA phone record issue? Is it possible to be too cynical about Bush’s motives?
N.Y. Times:
WASHINGTON, May 12 ? President Bush will use a television address on Monday night to offer new proposals to spur passage of legislation that could put millions of illegal immigrants on the path to American citizenship, the White House said today.
Mr. Bush will speak from the Oval Office beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern time and is expected to propose new enforcement measures along the United States’ border with Mexico, including the use of additional troops. The White House spokesman, Tony Snow, said the president would speak for about 20 minutes, and that television networks had been asked to carry the speech live.
“This is crunch time,” Mr. Snow told reporters this morning.

Are they preparing to “ride the range” on the border, John Wayne style? They won’t enforce the existing laws but if they can fan the flames down south it may give Rove time to sneak out the back door.
Do Bill O’ Reilly and Rush Limbaugh plan to hang scalpes from their belts and leave bodies by the watering holes for the buzzards? They must have some crunchy tales to tell, like O’Reilly when he was in combat—and boys, Snow says it’s “Crunch Time”.

A new, huge voting block for the Republicans. Why else would G.W. care. The US Congress passes thousands of laws every year, but we don’t need more re: immigration. There are plenty of tough laws on the books. This is about taking a “broken” policy and fiddling to make it work. The problem, of course, is that illegal aliens don’t bother to read much less adhere to laws regarding their entrance into the US. Either they make it or they don’t.
I am an American citizen living in South Africa. I have been married now to a South African for 5 years. In order for me to return to the US with my husband, and for him to remain there (and we have financial means so we won’t be a drain on the economy), my husband has to jump through major hoops and may still not be granted a permanent visa nor a green card. What is wrong with this picture? He’s not Latin; he is the “wrong” color here in Africa, as am I; he wants to do things by the book, legally. If I could only smuggle him in, darken his skin, change his name to Miguel, falsify work records to show he’s been a contributor to the (blackmarket)US economy for X years, he’d be “forgiven” and get his citizenship in a flash.
