Republicans are fleeing from the Bush administration as the president’s poll numbers reach historic lows.

That’s the conclusion of a Washington Post article that tracks “a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year.”

Washington Post:

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush’s approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP’s 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush’s governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

Unfortunately, while it’s satisfying to see Bush’s poll numbers go down, the fact that so many Americans are to the right of Bush on immigration is, to me, downright scary.

Lou Dobbs has a rant on immigration today that is just pure nativist demagoguery.

It would be nice to think you could vote them out, but the rightists control the Diebold voting machines. They can steal enough electoral districts to manage a tenuous hold on your country. It’s possible to cheat an election if you plausibly have 40% of the populace supporting you. Especially when they whip up the fear, smears and queers campaign later this year. Meanwhile, your economy will continue to implode. I’m afraid it’s too late for the U.S. I’m glad I emigrated down here whilst there was still time. Good luck mates—you’ll need it!

What a crock! If conservatives really aren’t for Bush then let them sign on to impeach him and let’s get it on! It’ll never happen, because Bush is the Republican poster boy and quintesential conservative icon and we all know it. What conservatives are running away from is Bush’s lack of popularity, not from Bush. Bush has done everything the conservatives could hope for, and exactly what any Republican elected president will do if given another chance. The truth is: Republicans have a faulty philosophy of how to govern this country and they just can’t admit it. They’ve seized the reigns of government lock-stock and barrel and they’ve only suceeded in driving it over a cliff. No matter how they spin it, or no matter how much distance they pretend to put between themselves and Bush, the truth is they just can’t govern without war, mismanagement, mendacity, and corruption. So it’s time to dump them again for at least another 40 years.
