Fox Will NOT Decriminalize Drugs

In a last-minute about-face, the Mexican president will not OK a bill that would have greatly loosened penalties on possession of personal amounts of drugs. It’s apparently the result of U.S. pressure.

AP:

Mexican President Vicente Fox backed off signing a drug decriminalization bill that the United States warned could result in “drug tourism” and increased availability of narcotics in American border communities.

Fox reversed course Wednesday and said he was sending the bill back to Congress for changes, just one day after his office had said he would sign it into law. The measure would have dropped criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs.

Fox’s statement said he will ask for corrections “to make it absolutely clear in our country, the possession of drugs and their consumption are, and will continue to be, a criminal offense.”

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders applauded Fox’s decision. On Friday, Sanders said he was “appalled” by the bill, saying it could increase drug availability north of the border.

Nice to see that my “follow the dollar” philosophy to learn the WHYs of situations is working fine.

American politicians, bureaucrats and “justice” workers (police, lawyers, courts, prisons, social workers, drug counselors, etc.) are making a FORTUNE from the illicit drug trade. There’s NO WAY they will allow any significant “decriminalization” to cut into their incomes.

Think I’m just a jaded old cynic, do you? Well perhaps I am, but I hold with my allegation. I was told in an economics class that fully ONE THIRD of the US GNP is, in some way, connected with the justice system. Whenever “they” come up with a new law you can bet your last dollar “they” stand to gain the most from it.

You do the math… how much of the justice system budget do you think is consumed by the laughable “War Against Drugs” that has never worked, and will never work? Remember how well prohibition dried up the country?

I define STUPIDITY as the action of continuing to do what doesn’t work.

The Mexican government has enough to deal with, without having to pursue and prosecute those who use small amounts of drugs.

It makes the arrest and prosecution roster look good though - all those arrests of essentially non-violent people. Meanwhile, the dealers, murderers-for-hire, pimps and other bottom-feeders will carry on, secure in the knowledge that they won’t be pursued.

I really thought Vicente Fox was taking a step forward for a minute there, but he was immediately stomped on. I wonder if Obrador, when (I hope) and if he’s elected, will try to pass the law again. After all, they should make their laws to improve their own lives, not those of any other country.

So Vicente Fox caved in to pressure form the American Drug War zealots—what a shock!

Meanwhile, the people who actually USE the drugs, do not have a great deal of interest in crack, pcp, meth and heroin.  At least, according to the US government’s own data:

Humans have always, and will always used various drugs.  It has not caused the downfall of mankind.  Greed, on the other hand ...
