The nation’s largest beverage distributors have agreed to remove the sugary drinks from school vending machines and cafeterias. Bill Clinton brokered the deal.

AP:

The nation’s largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all sales of sodas to public schools ? a step that will remove the sugary, caloric drinks from vending machines and cafeterias around the country.

The agreement was announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation and will also likely apply to many private and parochial schools.

“This is a bold step forward in the struggle to help 35 million young people lead healthier lives,” former President Clinton said at a news conference. “This one policy can add years and years and years to the lives of a very large number of young people.”

Under the agreement, the companies also have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools.

Very interesting, Bill, and I applaud the move. In a hungry world to have 67% of Americans 15-30 pounds overweight is obscene. I still can’t believe, in spite of a populace growing more grotesquely fatter every day, how much food I see my fellow countrymen carelessly & unthinkingly just throw away. We would see people in this country growing thinner if they just ate everything they put on their plates, or at least help someone else in the world have a chance at a meal. Think of how much oil it takes to clear land, plant, grow, then transport a crop. Then someone has to process, transport, then cook (not to mention all the people who labor to accomplish these tasks, or eat the finished product need personal transportation as well). Then to scrape half a dinner from your plate into the garbage (requiring more oil resources to dispose of); it’s not only wasteful, but sinful.
Nowhere during Clinton’s speech, that I saw & read, did I hear a mention of the additive to our food supply that has been rated the number one cause of obesity (and linked to 92 other illnesses), that being ASPARTAME. Do a little Google search if you are curious, and if you are even minimally health conscious you will not only start reading labels in the store, but be inclined to stick your head out your window shouting, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!!!”
Since it is a neuro-toxic poison that generates billions for corporate America, and has links up the political chain even to Rumsfield, the CIA, and Monsanto there is no effort being made by those in our government to protect the people of this country. This is to be expected since there are some very powerful lobbies working against ‘we the people’. Is it any wonder “Kick the bums out” is the mantra of today, and a complete change in government come November essential to re-aquiring our freedom from tyranny? Now do your homework and Google search (and read) some articles on ASPARTAME. It could prove the most patriotic action you’ll ever take.

This is ridiculous! I love soda. I don’t want the government telling me what I can and can’t do. It’s funny because I was watching a program on the history channel last night about Nazi Germany and how they forced people to be healthy. Guess I should be glad that I graduated from high school 3 years ago. I think people in this country need to walk more.
