Mexico’s Fox Will OK Drug Decriminalization

The Mexican president will sign a bill that drastically weakens penalties for possession of personal amounts of drugs like pot, coke, ecstasy and acid. But local judges can still detain or deport those found with the drugs.

Reuters:

Mexico’s president will approve a law that decriminalizes possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and other drugs to concentrate on fighting violent drug gangs, the government said on Tuesday.

President Vicente Fox will not oppose the bill, passed by senators last week, presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar told reporters, despite likely tensions with the United States.

“The president is going to sign that law. There would be no objection,” he said. “It appears to be a good law and an advance in combating narcotics trafficking.”

If drugs became legal, how would we ever fill our prisons? What new system would we need to disenfranchise those segments of the population which might not agree with those in power?

our leaders [both parties] make too much money off illegal drug trafficking to change things—they also traffic in state secrets: that’s what bush & cheney were doing when they outed plame—finally, they traffic in nuclear technology, which is what plame was trying to stop—our leaders like to keep the world on edge because it gives them the chance to score easy gains when regular folks panic

With “enlightenment” on both borders, perhaps the message might filter into the consciousness of what passes for US “leadership.” While Canada hasn’t yet passed “decriminalization” laws, most police authorities “don’t see” a few joints as any great threat to society.

The message is: Adult individuals have an inalienable right to take into their bodies ANY DAMN THING THEY DESIRE, from drugs to dildos, without interference from any agency, institution, government or religion. Of course, as adults, users MUST accept the personal consequences of doing so. We all choose the consequences when we choose the action. No way around that one.

Of course, prohibitions against trafficking and laws against counseling or feeding the stuff to minors MUST be in place and enforced. But in a free country, adults make the decisions for themselves. If, in your country this is not the case, then your country is NOT FREE. It’s just that simple.

Is “America, Land of the Free” just advertising hype? (Clearly a rhetorical question… with the volumes of “rules and regulations” that interfere with and control the lives of American citizens in their own country, America is ANYTHING BUT A FREE COUNTRY. That said, it’s clearly not yet the most fascist on the planet either… but it’s getting there.)

Enlightened legislators understand that to make laws you can’t enforce is an exercise in stupidity and futility. Let’s see if the US has any “enlightened legislators.”
