Everyone’s Got an Opinion on ColbertPosted on May 2, 2006
Reactions to Stephen Colbert’s Bush roast largely break down along lines of political affiliations. But there are exceptions. Check ’em out. Also, watch Tucker Calson call it an ”embarrassing public flop.”

For those who think so, could you please explain in greater detail why Colbert went too far? I fully enjoyed the satirical kick in the nuts and only wish I was in the room to enjoy the uncomfortableness of those who deserve it.
Yes, they deserve it.

Colbert did exactly what he does on his show every night. What else would you expect. The people who invited him o speak are the only ones to blame if his performance was not what they expected.

COLBERT THE EGO-HEAD: FAUX OR NO?
Report thisThe Press Dinner is traditionally a modestly unruly bipartisan oasis. Metaphorically speaking, the President did his part by painting an artistic, humorous, self deprecating graffiti appropriate to the evening. Colbert threw fecal matter on the wall.
Either he did not understand the historical context of his assignment or his ego drove him to make the evening about himself, sans artistic merit: in which case he morphed into his own faux ego-head character.
I have the Daily Show and Bill Maher on my T.V. speed dial and would gladly stand in line to cast a vote to impeach this administration but I found Colbert to be boorish.

Colbert reminded me of the jesters and fools in Shakespeare’s plays. With humor he says the truth--something no one else in the court dare say. I admit he was not as subtle in playing the fool and so King George was not amused--the message was clear enough that even he got it. As for the fact that the audience froze--what could you expect when the press has come, for the most part, to serve, as Colbert noted, to simply type up what the Administration issues as “truth.”

I’ve never seen such biting satire...and right in Bush’s face! Colbert is a god.

OK, thought experiment time. It’s 1972. Same event, with President Nixon. Haldeman and Erlichman are in the audience. The Watergate break-in has made news, the illegal bombing of Cambodia has come to light, the Pentagon Papers are out… Steve Colbert (magically) comes to the stage and confronts them about the criminal activities these guys are involved in, the war actions, and people in the audience are aware that their may be indictments, criminal charges forthcoming…
Would you expect him to be funny? Would you want the audience to crack up? Would you complain about his timing? Would you accuse him of going too far? I doubt it.
There would be a pall hanging over the proceedings. And so there was with Colbert last night. It brought home that we are indeed in bad times to come, with the best hope being drastic changes as happened back then.

Liberals know of no occasion where they should not force everyone to listen to their tired, lying mantras. Funerals, light-hearted roasts, men dying on the battlefield.
Liberals can’t win at the polls so they skunk around like rats in the alley looking for a place to shit.

Hats off to Stephen Colbert!I was hugely disappointed in the White House Press corp.I knew that they did not have the guts to be critical of the President, but I thought they would atleast have the decency and a sense of humor to accomodate a brilliant comic! They looked shocked to hear Colbert telling it like it is!Keep up the good work,Stephen,America needs you!

Surprise, surprise. The butts of the joke didn’t think it was all that funny. What were they thinking inviting Colbert in the first place?
The show was for everyone on OUR side of the lens, not for the attendees.
...and what a fine show it was.

Colbert was hilarious unless you are a member of the Bush adminstration or the so-called liberal media that refuses to give Colbert any prime time coverage. There’s “truthiness” in every laugh; that’s why it’s funny. Bush cringed as did those in the press who are complicit in six years of incompetence. I howled! Colbert for the next big news anchor job!

One simply must read Frank Rich’s piece in the NYT, “Laura Bush’s Mission Accomplished,” on last year’s dinner to appreciate fully what Stephen Colbert accomplished this time around. Also, at the end of the piece is inclusion of an item that is astounding in what it foretells, yet no one could have predicted. It is enough to make one believe that the Fates truly are at work. (A simple Google search will yield a readily available on-line version.)

Hooray for Colbert. If no one has the balls to shoot Bush, at least Colbert did his best.
Tucker Carlson can take off his tie or put it back on. In either case he is a shit and a jerk.

Surprise! Somebody snuck in and meesed up the little yuk yuk party. That Colbert was funny at all is a miracle, the truth of this administration is in NO WAY funny. It stopped being humorous some time ago. It is a living nightmare. And it is not about to turn around until more people wake up from the hypnotic dream and face reality. Thanks Colbert, this was history before our eyes. But we’ll see if we get anywhere - please give to Democrats running for Senate and Congress, that’s our only hope. Don’t waste money on creating a third party, not right now. Don’t say all politicians and both parties are the same. By now we all see how wrong that is.

Hey, I just saw your main web page story that claims that 40 % of Americans can’t place Iraq on a map, this clearly explains why Tucker Carlson’s on TV! That’s a big share of the market .

That the audience (i.e correspondents) weren’t laughing and were “uneasy” with Cobert’s sarcasm and irony is testimonial to the cozy relationship between the Washington press corp and the administration. These dinners in which the press and government officials wine and dine together leave a bad taste in the mouth of Joe Citizen and only further confirm the lack of independent reporting of the news. Whether or not there is a conflict of interest these affairs certainly provide the appearance of one.

Stephen Colbert deserves a medal for the courage he displayed in flaying not only our lying, miserable excuse of a President, but also the whining wimps in the press who daily let him get away with his act. I just watched “Good Night and Good Luck”, and I can’t help but think that Edward R Murrow, were he here today, would have given Stephen Colbert a standing ovation all by himself!

Some people took the humour and removed the seriousness of Colbert message. He was attacking the current administration, something the press needs to do but seem to neglect. The press are their meant to be critical of the administration and to keep people informed instead they are nothing but a mouthpiece for the administration.
“General Mosley, Air Force Chief of Staff. General Peter Pace. They still support Rumsfeld. You guys arent retired yet, right?”
About the President:
“He believes the same thing Wednesday, that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened Tuesday.”
And here is the truth:
“Mr. President, I wish you hadnt made the decision to quickly, sir. I was vying for the job. I think I would have made a fabulous press secretary. I have nothing but contempt for these people. I know how to handle these clowns.”
He truly does have contempt for his audience. And most of his jokes was at them and not for them.

The people not laughing were the same people being exposed by Colberts edgy on the money attack. The audience was the same as the one that roared with laughter at Bush’s “nope, no WMDs over here. Play that video to the parents of soldiers killed in Iraq. See how they respond. To judge if Colbert was funny or not read the transcript.
Reality has a liberal bias, not funny? Give me a break.

Colbert was ballsy and in top form. The prez is in no position to “blow” in that he finds himself in a public situation. If he didn’t like what was going on all he had to do was pray and Jesus would have sent a destroying angel to kill the hapless comic on the spot. As I recal dubya is in touch with the almighty bunch isn’t he?
