Bush Not Amused At Colbert’s Roast

Colbert
"The Colbert Report" host Stephen Colbert delivering the annual White House Correspondent's Dinner roast.

The president and his wife, Laura, did not seem amused at the blistering “tribute” satirist Stephen Colbert gave them at the annual White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

  • Watch the video (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)
  •

  • Salon calls it Colbert’s “crowning moment.”

  • Editor & Publisher:

WASHINGTON—A blistering comedy “tribute” to President Bush by Comedy Central’s faux talk show host Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondent Dinner Saturday night left George and Laura Bush unsmiling at its close.

Earlier, the president had delivered his talk to the 2700 attendees, including many celebrities and top officials, with the help of a Bush impersonator.

Colbert, who spoke in the guise of his talk show character, who ostensibly supports the president strongly, urged the Bush to ignore his low approval ratings, saying they were based on reality, “and reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

He attacked those in the press who claim that the shake-up at the White House was merely re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. “This administration is soaring, not sinking,” he said. “They are re-arranging the deck chairs—on the Hindenburg.”

I am now officially a Colbert fan.  All this time I wasn’t sure whether his ultra conservative persona was real or just an act.  I started researching more after I saw he get his head shaved by a General acting on a direct “order” from President Obama.  Anyway, I end up watching the 2006 White House dinner video and reading the transcript.  WOW!  The man is a master!  Who would dare go into the lions’ den only to insult the lions and fling flaming arrows their way?  Only a man with BALLS OF STEEL!  Incredible!!! Colbert YOU THE MAN!  YOU STUD YOU!!!  Someday you are gonna get a lifetime achievement award, and this video will be proudly played as one of your GREATEST MOMENTS!

    Live long and Prosper!

I’ve read the comments on this page and, for the most part, I am relieved to know that so many of our citizens are finally waking up to the truth. What I want to know is, when are we going to quit complaining and actually do something about it?

As I see it, we have been sheep… for who knows how long…. it’s terrifying to think of how long this has been going on…. and, I believe the terrifying control these people have over the world is directly related to our insatiable desire to believe their BS.

It is possible for us to fix this world and all it requires is information. Please turn as many of our fellow citizens as you can on to the truth. If enough of us quit following the herd, their hold will be broken. DO AS MUCH INDEPENDENT RESEARCH AS POSSIBLE!!! Know what you’re talking about. THE NEWS IS LYING TO YOU!!! And, it’s making us look like idiots. Check out ZEITGEIST THE MOVIE (zeitgeistmovie.com ). Watch it thru to the end. Please.

And, can someone please tell me…. I am aware that there are more people like us out there ready to make a change. Where do we go to organize our efforts? We desperately need to organize our efforts. How can we possibly succeed otherwise?

I do believe this is a brilliant bit of comedy. To be completely straight….let’s say this. Everyone had an opportunity to see Colbert’s show beforehand. If the Bush administration expected any less they wouldn’t have invited him. I am convinced that there actually some intelligent people somewhere in there… I think Cheney would have figured it out. He’s a bright guy…evil…. but bright. So they knew what he was….and they got what they asked for. Maybe they thought he would hold back a little… but he didn’t. And now he’s a hero. Cuz Bush is a monkey for his organ grinding master Cheney…. All hail Halliburton and OIL… Queue the Beverly Hillbillies music

I like steven colbert. His show is hilarious. But most of his jokes were in bad taste. I mean you get welcomed to the White House and you do that? I mean your supposed to make jokes but instead you basically make it an outlet for your political views? Like someone said. Funny knows no political party. But obviously MOST (not all) of his jokes were democratic rants disguised as jokes.

I just can’t believe that people actually thought he was a republican lol.

Now I have my doubts about Colbert and his real politics as he did the unpardonable. He put on his show one of our true right wing monsters and gave him legitimacy, I mean for yukes he had Henry Kissinger on his show and no one who has any leanings to the liberal side would put that liar and killer of hundreds of thousands of innocents. How could Colbert do that if he truly abhors the policies of Bush and Co. And you know, I answered my own question. Colbert is a fraud, thru and thru and for my money he is not better than O’Reily whom he is a knock off trying to appear as someone who makes fun of him. Someone try and reach Colbert’s people and explain how they could have Kissinger on to do what, increase his ratings, appease some higher up, because if he can’t justify whe he had that monster on I no longer will tune into a two faced hypocrit which I now annoit Colbert as a charter memember. I watched the video very closely and could not help but notice Wilson and Plame cracking up with warm looks of admiration on their smiling faces during Colbert’s bit on the shameful WH outing of her as a CIA operative. No holding back on their part…
Scalia, troglodyte tho’ he may be, at least has a sense of humor about his Italian roots- he was clearly enjoying himself. And the venerable Helen Thomas was immortalized in the video bit. She was perfect! Bravo. The WH never knew what was about to hit them. Let that eagle soar, Stephen! And did anyone notice the way Colbert cooly brushed past the prez at the end? Brass balls for sure. If Duhbya was really an emperor he would have had that court jester’s head removed for going too far in his lampoons.Sorry King George, but this really is America after all! Land of the free. Like a fine burgundy the performance of Stephen Colbert will build with time. Fifty years from now any historian who wants to come to grips with the failed presidency of W will have no choice but to review this brilliant satire: it masterfully captures how, at this juncture, America has so shamefully completely lost its way. The video is a historical document of incredible importance: and oh, by the way, it is bloody funny!

Alright, here’s some truth.  Things are not going well for this administration, that is obvious and I won’t begin to come to the president’s defense.  However, lets talk about the American people; nobody seems to want to “roast” us.  Lets start with some topics from Colbert’s dialog:

Oil.  How is it that most of us say the Iraq war is, “all about oil” and how wrong it is to war over oil while, at the same time, giving low marks to the president due to the price of oil.  A poll last week showed that 3 of 10 Americans still plan on buying the gas guzzling SUVs we’re addicted to.  How many of you reading this owns an automobile that gets less than 22 MPG?  Yes, like Bush, we believe the same thing Wednesday that we believed on Monday: oil prices will go down, there’s an oil company conspiracy, it’s the government’s fault, and this is not a rationalization for my Tahoe purchase.

Saudi Arabia: the religious police, within the past few years, forced female children back into a burning building because they did not cover their faces properly.  Oh, but they have a lot of oil.  Can’t wait to get that new Trailblazer, though, right?

Trade.  Most of us demand something be done with our newest, greatest trading partner, China.  Then there’s all the fuss about NAFTA and jobs lost.  Amazingly, though, most of us also cannot wait to rush down to the local Walmart to “save” on all those Chinese goods.

I have to stop now.  This is all too easy.  Read these remarks and rationalize to yourselves, “it’s not me because I own a Civic” or some such nonsense.  We are the root of all these problems.  Sadly, our leaders bear a startling resemblance to us, the American people.

Remember after 9/11 when the average American displayed the full extent of his or her patriotism by purchasing a $5 flag (probably made in China) to waive around? Ironically, some then complained that the price of flags inflated and this was somehow wrong! Many of the same people would never send their sons or daughters to war, though as was demonstrated after countless polls.

I spoke with a military recruiter in the NY area to ask him, “after 9/11, did the recruiting numbers go up?  You know, once we identified Afghanistan as the country that the attack was based from?  Let’s leave Iraq out of the discussion as we had not gone to war yet.  Surely those who were closest to the attack were motivated to serve!”  The answer, “recruiting stayed exactly the same.”  Such patriotism demands that, “your sons and daughters serve” while I wave this flag, that is, by the way, too expensive and we should investigate the manufacturers for inflating the price in such a time of great need for “price gouging.”

Seems like we deserve everything we get to me.  Enough truth for ya? grin

While I praise Mr.Colbert for his “remaining in character performance”, I would ask those who are ready to enshrine this persona in the same vein as Mr. Murrow, don’t you think those who put this thing together already knew what Colbert was going to say?  Why would Bush and Co. deliberately give a platform to this guy?  Think about it.  Most of you have praise the courage and “balls” of Colbert for his performance.  You need to pass on some of that praise to the man he was ridiculing.

Clearly, this was the wrong forum for this kind of satire.

The “liberal press” might have enjoyed this in a different room.

But frankly I think this routine was awkward on so many levels:

    1) The Bill O’Reily Mean Guy Act instantly makes you uncomfortable
    2) Liberal reporters nervously want to appear “balanced”
    3) This administration is somewhere between the Nixon White House and the Third Reich in terms of openness to criticism
    4) War is not funny
    5) This war is particularly not funny
    6) Less is more. Edit.
    7) Next year, get one of those Branson comedians. They’re funny!

“Colbert crossed the line,” said one top Bush aide, who rushed out of the hotel as soon as Colbert finished. Another said that the president was visibly angered by the sharp lines that kept coming.

Interesting that 2,700 assumingly astute “correspondents” essentially sat on their hands during this presentation.

In America, about the most venomous charge that can be laid against a person, other than being a “fag,” is being UN-AMERICAN.

It’s my opinion that the silence was deafening at the dinner because to be heard laughing in the face of the President would be considered by members of that privileged audience a sin of the highest order.

It’s a puzzling phenomenon… GWB seems to get away with just about every dumb-ass, peace-threatening notion that crosses his mind. But you just watch the hysteria if he ever gets caught with his pants down. American morality seems only to cover the body from the neck down. It’s “anything goes” from the neck up.

I thought that Stephen Colbert hit the nail on the head in his roast of GWB.  I too noticed that the laughing quieted down after the first few statements.  I guess that the truth hurts.  It’s too bad that the president is criminally insane and thinks that God talks to him.  If that isn’t adequate evidence that he should be removed from office per the 25th ammendment, I don’t know what is.  By the way, he likes to torture people and regularly breaks the law. Hello!  Read Charles Savages article in the 5/1/06 Boston Globe, talking about GWB’s 750 signing statements, “because he interprets the Constitution” differently and doesn’t need to follow the law if he “sees” it differently.  But as Molly Ivins wrote in her latest article, Congress has no clue how bad their graft and conlusion with this war criminal looks to “we the people”.  I sincerely hope that enough democrats are elected in November.  But EVERYONE should be replaced.  Leiberman and Feinstein both are listed as democrats and they’re anything but.  It’s too bad that officials need to join a party and follow the party code.

Colbert has incredibly witty and shrewd. Obviously, that person didn’t get it.

There was laughter but is was restrained and subdued. Because, out of respect I would guess, laughing would basically have been laughing AT THE PRESIDENT. Get it?

Also, perhaps, the audience, being White House CORROSPONDENTS where also being ripped apart by Colbert. Get it?

Colbert, under the guise of comedy, exposed all of the colossal mistakes, the blatant illegal actions and the sheer stupidities made by those “spineless politicians” that are in the White House Administration, as well as exposing the complicity of those spineless journalists in the audience.

COLBERT THE EGO-HEAD: FAUX OR NO?
The Press Dinner is traditionally a bipartisan oasis. Metaphorically speaking, the President did his part by artistically displaying a humorous, self deprecating graffiti appropriate to the evening. Colbert threw fecal matter on the wall.
Either he did not understand the historical context of his assignment or his ego drove him to make the evening about himself: in which case he morphed into his own faux ego-head character.
I have the “Daily Show” on my T.V. speed dial and would gladly stand in line to cast a vote to impeach this administration but I found Colbert to be “boorish.”

O.K., let’s talk talent, not politics.
From a comic standpoint, it reminded me a little of Andy Kaufman in that Colbert was able to totally immerse himself in his persona, and stay there under what must have been enormous pressure.

The jokes themselves were very funny, indeed. I got the feeling the audience was spending more time thinking about how the jokes would be received than the actual content. I’ll bet there would have been a much different response had the prez not been there.  But that’s what made it such great theater, eh?

As with Kaufman, I’m not sure how much Colbert’s real persona is reflected in his performance. Does he really despise Bush?  Dunno, but it was the most subversive performance I’d ever hope to see.

Must have been a lot of lapdogs in that audience, who perhaps also think Bush is one of those divine-right kings and who probably laughed hysterically at his little just-where-are-those-weapons-of-mass-destruction demonstration in the Oval Office. Cruel humor is the only kind Bush understands.

Finally, someone said it like it is.

Colbert, it seems like, has been working for a gig like this for the past 5 years. He has been a working his “Republican/Religuous/Self Righteous/Nut Case” persona he plays on ‘The Colbert Report’ so well that I’ll betcha that many in the MSM did not see this coming, believing that Colbert actually was what he was acting as.

Many pundits, we know, talk about TV and movies (and hollywood in general) without actually watching. (We hear all the time, scathing reviews of movies which have lines like, “I didn’t watch it, but…”)

Many of those interviewed by Colbert, we learn, had not watched his show.

So, while Colbert was “pretending” to be this Religious Right media person, those who simply talk among themselves to get their knowledge of what actually is going on, I am sure, did not see this coming.

The silence of the audience was deafening—and oh so telling—as he said one of his best lines: “You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know—fiction.”

You love your country. You feel safe here in the United States, thanks to your president who talks to God.

How about this prophet in the White House? Not the nation’s appointed, but God’s anointed.

We are one nation under God. It is in God we trust. To God we do pray for the blessing upon America. We are God’s elect.

We must be God’s elect because the president is doing the will of God by starting wars for our national benefit and the global good.

This is true isn’t it–what’s good for us is good for the …

I have loved Colbert since I first saw him - but after last night I am DELIRIOUS over the man!  I watched on C-Span and cheered his COURAGE…uncompromised, untamed, unintimidated…he was the bravest human being in the whole place.

I think the intent of the GW/Bridges routine was to diffuse criticism, lull the audience - and the public…“If they see me laugh about this stuff, they’ll think ever’thangs OK”...an example of the puerile BushCo mentality.  And I thought…“Oh no, this has upstaged Colbert before he even utters a word”.  WRONG.  He and the venerable Helen Thomas were just superb.

To those who are piously whining about Colbert being over the edge, disrespectful, etc. I want to point out: GW’s “jokes” about Cheney were condescending, snide and inappropriate for a President to direct at his own VP.  My guess is that Dick & Lynn are livid.  Watch your backside, GW, you may have crossed the line this time.

Stephen Junior’s pinfeathers must be quivering with pride!

I loved Colbert last night for all the reasons stated here.  And I love that he was exactly like the Colbert we see every night at 11:30.  an early morning C-Span caller (or maybe it was a guest?) said that Colbert’s humor is so fast and complex, relative to Bush’s humor for example, that the audience was possibly quiet b/c they didn’t have time to react fully to each joke before another one came along.  I wonder how many in the audience know his show or his shtick (schtick?).

I saw Safer’s interview of Colbert on 60 minutes and reviewed the earlier comments, and I want to follow up on the theme I raised in my comment #8243 posted on the story re Colbert’s interview of Kristol. Most succintly: If Colbert were viscerally committed to the values which stand behind his critique, wouldn’t he have taken the opportunity to just deck Bush? (Throttle the man about his neck until removed by bodyguards…) I was struck that through the course of Safer’s interview, Colbert displayed some sense of moral ambiguity about what he does - e.g., his confession that he does not let his children observe that he makes his living trucking insincerity. Maybe it is true that his balls are brass and he’s the bravest man in America, or it could be that he is first and foremost a performer and entertainer who found a niche. I don’t claim to know, I only want to know that at least the point I raise (I don’t claim to invent it)has been raised. Years ago somebody (I forget who) observed, upon seeing Nancy Reagan seated on the lap of Mr. T., that political and social satire had become useless - reality had become a characature of itself. As much as I enjoy Colbert’s talent for expressing my own sense of exasperation, I cannot shake the sense that he is, despite whatever he may believe he does, just some of the shiny bubble distractions observed, oh, by Rob Cordrey? What could any of us accomplish with a staff of 80?

‘tribute’ filled with his usual sharp and subtle wit.  We wondered at the lack of response from his audience (the President’s response was predictable), and were undecided whether said audience was just too mainstream, or inhibited by circumstance, or could it be? just didn’t get it.  Maybe they were just stuck in the usual expectation of boredom.

Steven Colbert was brilliant. Of course, he had a lot to work with. Bush comedy really writes itself. I loved the “liberal media is skewed toward reality” line. The “use the glacier metaphor now, your grandchildren won’t understand it” bit, the Sicilian gestures to Scalia, the outing of Valerie Plame, the Hindenburg, the glass 68% empty, the Iraqi government governs best that governs least, Helen Thomas asking why we invaded Iraq, all were sadly funny because they ring so true. This President is more than an embarrassment. He is a serious threat to American values, to world peace, to financial stability, to our constitutional freedoms, to trust in government and to rational thought. We all must work together to gain a Democratic majority in Congress that will investigate all his lying unlawful actions and hopefully file articles of impeachment.
