Bush Reverses Himself on Gasoline Policy

In 2000, Bush criticized Clinton for toying with the Strategic Oil Reserve to push down prices—which is exactly what Bush did today.

And, oh yeah: he also urged the loosening of environmental rules on emissions to help cut costs.

Think Progress:

President Bush will order the Department of Energy to stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Oil Reserve “in order to get more fuel on the market and help reduce rising gasoline prices.”

In September 2000, then-Gov. George W. Bush criticized President Clinton for proposing to use the strategic oil reserve in response to high prices:

The Strategic Reserve is an insurance policy meant for a sudden disruption of our energy supply or for war. Strategic Reserve should not be used as an attempt to drive down oil prices right before an election. It should not be used for short-term political gain at the cost of long-term national security.

Today, Bush did precisely what he criticized President Clinton for five-and-a-half years ago.

How on earth we allowed Cheney to get away with closed door meetings on energy policy way back when is beyond me.

Conflict of interest? Cronyism? Out and out fraud on “we the people”? I mean it was (is) so obvious it’s kind of like when I was growing up on a small dairy farm in Northern Minnesota and not smelling the cow manure ... I smelled it all right. It was so pervasive that I didn’t NOTICE it!

Another analogy is kind of like all of us waiting to win the lottery before we start thinking about imposing a windfall profits tax ... “Please, Lord, let me get mine before we are held to account!”

The trouble with G.W. is that he has been wallowing around in special privilege all his life, so it just doesn’t seem unusual to him what’s going on. “That’s the way the world is, isn’t it?”

He’s just plain dumb AND ignorant. That’s scarey enough, but Cheney and Rumsfeld are who we REALLY have to worry about. They KNOW what’s going on.
