Juan Cole
From news.harvard.edu

Juan Cole, a liberal University of Michigan historian and outspoken Bush administration critic, is reportedly close to receiving a tenured teaching position at Yale University--but not if a motivated group of conservatives has anything to say about it.

The liberal U. of Michigan historian and outspoken Bush administration critic is reportedly close to receiving a tenured teaching position at Yale University. But a group of conservatives, led by a Yale and a Harvard student, are trying to queer the deal by painting Cole as anti-Semitic.

Glenn Greenwald has the goods.

Jane Hamsher has more.

Glenn Greenwald:

One of the most annoying victim movements around is the petulant and growing group, led by the odious David Horowitz, which incessantly whines that pro-Bush students on college campuses are treated very, very unfairly because their views are not praised by all that many people and sometimes are even harshly criticized.

As I’ve written about many times before, the examples of supposed victimhood almost never entail any actual repression of, or institutional punishment for, the expression of unpopular conservative views, but rather, are composed only of disagreement by other students and faculty members which make the right-wing students feel uncomfortable and unloved. In that regard, this whiny movement is nothing more than the mirror image of the worst elements of the PC movement of the 1990s—while deceitfully parading under the banner of free expression, its true aim is to render impermissible the expression of political views which the conservative students dislike.

A vivid example illustrating their true agenda can be found in the blossoming “controversy” over what appears to be the imminent offer of a tenured professorship by Yale University to liberal Professor of Mideast Studies (and well-read blogger) Juan Cole, to teach at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies and in the Yale History Department. Many Bush supporters are arguing that Professor Cole espouses political views which apparently ought to be off-limits on college campuses, and there is thus a burgeoning movement to induce Yale to reconsider its decision. These efforts, of course, are coming from many of the same circles of sermoniziers who hold themselves out as defenders of academic freedom when they decry the oh-so-terrible reception which greets right-wing views on some campuses.

It occurs to me that the Democratic party may find itself with what President Bush refered to as political currency. Will they voice that fact to the American public? Will Bush accept the fact?  What do you think will happen?

“Horowitz and his ilk represent those who want to start a Cultural Revolution on the Chairman Mao’s model. Purge the Universities and schools of the intellecual elites and send armies of Christianized Bible toting minions out restore the moral fiber of the US. Then send our pure of heart and mind youth off to fight the battle against evil on the charred remains of Israel, allied of course with the 144,000 Jews for Jesus who will be saved. I assume Horowitz is one of their number. I can’t think of anything more anti-semitic than that.”

This is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever heard.

The fact that Horowitz is even allowed to speak for conservatives is illuminative of its plunging dive into moral relativism.

Horowitz is a self-admitted American traitor, yet still spews his hateful rhetoric at Jane Fonda.  Never forget, eh David?

The first step is understanding what is meant by “the Bush administration” which Cole discredits.

Who are the people in today’s ruling class?  Al Gore is representative of the old ruling class elites and John Kerry the new would-be.  Gore was told to take a hike by the democratic party elites and the war mongering Kerry who represented no opposition to the neo-cons was foist off on us even tho the illegal war in the middle east was the main concern of rank and file democrats.  Rham Emanuel is the democrat who will choose the next nominees from the candidates for the democratic party.  Does anyone still think the Democrats are going to save us?

The neo-cons and the liberals are flip sides of the same coin.  Both represent new elites who want to do away with the old ruling class and take its place.  According to Strauss

http://www.nhinet.org/ryn18-1.htm

in order to do this they must first discredit the religion, traditions and culture of the old ruling elites which we see happening everyday on the internet.

Attacking Juan Cole who daily discredits the main thrust of both the neo-cons and john kerry liberals is evidence that its not the poverty stricken right wing christians who are behind bush’s policies.

New elites want to do away with the old ruling class and replace it.  May god have mercy on arabs and christians.

Its not Christians but people at Yale and Harvard who are behind Bush’s policies.  They are the new would-be ruling class.

Say you wanta revolution.  Welcome to the cultural wars.  God save us from neo-liberals and neo-cons and save our country.

I have know Juan and his family going back to 1967. He has always been religiously tolerant and inquisitive as well as intelligent and perceptive.

I once espressed concern for his safety after observing the jackal right baying for his blood. But he dismissed them as not being worth the concern. I am a staunch conservative Catholic (lector, cantor, parish council, KofC) and find he is more forgiving of his enemies, dare I say more Christian, then me.

Horowitz and his ilk represent those who want to start a Cultural Revolution on the Chairman Mao’s model. You’re right it’s very open to views on college campuses to the conservative movement. What in gods name are you talking about conservative media. Conservative politics give me a break. Bush wants open borders the media bashes the military effort daily. They talk about the supposed abuses in our military prisons. The fact is the moronic secularist are destroying the country & it will take some whopping conservative movemnet to save what is left of this great nation. I am only glad you fools were not around in the 1940’s. WHen I talk to ww2 vets they are disgusted by the democrat socialist marxist. You fools indoctrinate students @ a young age. By the way how many conservative groups chase military recruiters off of campuses then act like they did a good thing. There is so much to hate about the left I don’t know where to begin. By the way if this country is being hijacked by the religous right why is it easier to get porn & high times

I still view Yale as a hotbed of Tories. They still want to return the monarchy.

Unfortunately it is not, the idle holders of idle capital, it is, the rapious holders of rapious capital.

It is hardly surprising to hear that it is not enough for conservative Americans to dominate elected offices, business and the mainstream media but that they must also dominate higher education! No brain cell must be left to decide for itself.
Every day America moves further into the realm of irretrievable stupidity which makes the moves against Dr Cole even more pathetic. A man capable of making rational arguments and supporting them with evidence is obviously not welcome in American debate. In Nov 2004 I decided not to return to America until 2009 but if this trend continues I am not sure when I will feel comfortable again in a land I have so happily visited many times.
