No Deal on Immigration

The immigration bill, which seemed to have majority support, failed in the Senate Friday amid efforts to amend the bill. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called the amendments proposed by conservative Republicans “filibuster by amendment.” So much for the hyped bipartisan compromise on immigration reform.

N.Y. Times:

WASHINGTON, April 7—A carefully constructed compromise on immigration reform apparently fell apart in the Senate today after Democrats fended off conservative Republican efforts to amend the agreement and an effort to cut off debate failed by a lopsided vote.

After the 60-to-38 vote, the Senate returned to routine business, sidelining a two-week effort to find a way of dealing with the estimated 11 million people who are living in the country illegally.

After years of Republican incompetense and corruption for their own gain, why should the Democrats make it easy for them on an issue that is a very difficult one.

has anyone figured out why democrats are supporting the McCain bill? The only group really served by the bill is business that employ the illegals for the cheap labor. that depresses wages and benefits for all the rest of us up through the middle classes. the democrats are voting against their own power base. Why? for that matter, why are the republicans voting against the bill? I’m confused, for the first time, I find myself on the republican side against the democrats. Help!!
