The scandal-tarred former House majority leader won’t seek reelection to Congress and intends to resign in May or June.

  • Update: Just three weeks ago, the AP reported DeLay’s victory in the Republican primary and his impending “general election fight against an organized, well-funded Democrat with a score to settle.”
  •

  • UPDATE #2: DeLay claimed to a Time magazine reporter upon his surprise announcement, “You can’t prove to me one thing that I have done for my own personal gain.”
  •

  • UPDATE #3: Read the entire transcript of DeLay’s resignation interview.

  • UPDATE #4: Now, down to brass tacks: Can he be replaced in the election? Swingstateproject.com seems to think so.
  •

  • UPDATE #5: The Washington Post has a list of articles that chronicle DeLay’s downfall.

    AP:

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texan touched by a lobbying scandal that ensnared some of his former top aides and cost the Republican his leadership post, won’t seek re-election to Congress and intends to resign, Republican officials said Monday.

They said DeLay would leave his seat in May or June.

It was not clear whether or how DeLay could remove his name from the November ballot, but if he did, party officials would presumably be able to select a replacement who could then run against Democratic nominee Nick Lampson.

Perfect.  Absolutely perfect.  Tom DeLay, the American spokes-person on morals, the American icon of moral behavior.  I can think of no other more qualified to represent America throughout the world. Forget Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, The City Shining on a Hill - behold, Tom deLay.

Oh, that’s right, I fired Dick yesterday. Oh, OK, whenever… Yeh, well, I’m jist outahere, if you know what I mean, and I think you probably do. Adios, muthafuckers. Hey!
