Senate Panel Passes Immigration BillPosted on Mar 27, 2006The bill, which requires approval by the full Senate, clears the way for 11 million illegal aliens to seek U.S. citizenship, and will allow some 1.5 million workers to seek temporary jobs legally. This is a big win for the hundreds of thousands of people who joined protest marches this past weekend.

There is also a great article in the NY Times by Paul Krugman on illegal immigrants and the economic effect they have on American citizens. Aside from the marches and protests that may or may not have influenced the Senate panel decision, I wonder whether this is the start of a distinct class society. Will, if Bush gets his way, this be the beginning of the real “working class?” If so, where does that put all the Americans whose job will soon be replaced by the labor of illegal immigrants-below this working class or somewhere slightly above? The future, needless to say, looks quite sobering yet very strangely fascinating.

Yes, it’s a big win for the hundreds of thousands of people who marched this weekend. What’s the lesson? Spontaneity is the mother of revolution, that’s what! How about a similar march right now to bring the troops home and stop the Iraq war. How? Same as for immigant rights. We just do it, that’s how! And who leads? Everyone’s a leader, that’s who.
