U.S. Envoy: Iran Supporting Iraq Insurgents

The pretense has been shattered. The U.S. is explicitly accusing Iran of supplying money and training to anti-U.S. fighters in Iraq.

Complicating matters: America is in the midst of trying to negotiate with Iran over its nuclear ambitions. What a hornet’s nest.

The Washington Post:

BAGHDAD, March 23—Iran is publicly professing its support for Iraq’s stalemated political process while its military and intelligence services back outlawed militias and insurgent groups, U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said Thursday.

Iranian agents train and arm Shiite Muslim militias such as the Mahdi Army, linked to one of Iraq’s most powerful clerics, Khalilzad said, and also work closely with Sunni Arab-led insurgent forces including Ansar al-Sunna, blamed for dozens of deadly attacks on Iraqi and American soldiers and Shiite civilians.

“Our judgment is that training and supplying, direct or indirect, takes place, and that there is also provision of financial resources to people, to militias, and that there is presence of people associated with Revolutionary Guard and with MOIS,” the Afghan-born Khalilzad said, referring to Iran’s main military force and its Ministry of Intelligence and Security.

Snorri - You may indeed be right about the Bush Regime dealings with Iran, however I remind you these are the same folks that aided Saddam with precursors to WMD and provided Intell during the Iraqi-Irani War. They also gave the green light to Saddam for the Kuwaiti invasion. The Bush family has a long history of aiding America’s “enemies” and the when hostilities “breakout” profit from it.

There is also am Armeggedonsist quality to the Bush Regime that should not be ignored.

As for American Military capabilities, Troops and material are being pre-positioned in the south.Troops are being taken from Afganistan, Europe and Asia as we “speak”. I can not tell you how I know this, other than it is from personal MIl sources that I trust.

The Obj are the Southern oilfields. A small area about a 5th of the size of Iraq. The Kharg Island terminal will also be taken. These are by the way the same Objs. that Saddam had when he started the War with Iran.

Positions along the Gulf will also be taken.

The excuse will be either a Govt. supported attack ala 911 or “finding” WMD on American proper or an at sea incident.

We know the Bush Regime lied about WMD, greeted as Liberators and so many other things. While to you and me an attack on Iran is folly, to the Bush Regime it will bring more Power and Profit.

That being all said, I like your scenerio much better, and if I had to choose the lesser of 2 evils I hope you are right.
Peace.

I was immediately concerned when I saw the headline of this article. Then I clicked on it and saw that it was just another WaPo stenography/propaganda piece for Bushco.

Since neither of these sources is either honest or accurate, I started laughing as soon as I saw this was from the WaPo, a newspaper I wouldn’t believe if you paid me.

Please try for greater accuracy and NO MORE PROPAGANDA, please.

Is Khalilzad related to “Curve-Ball?” This is propaganda of the first order. I agree with S.S. except his doubt about any of this leading to any serious agression by the US.  I expect it will lead to an attack on Iran, timed and staged to garner Repub votes in November - unless the political climate in late October indicates that it would be a bad move. In this administration politics drives policy down any road that will win an election

The laughable claim that the Iranians are arming their own worst enemies is actually consistent with my hypothesis, expressed elswhere on this board, that the saber rattling against Iran is just political cover for consumption inside the US.  In real life, we are working in parallel with the Iranian regime in Iraq, supporting the same Shiite religious parties and fighting Baathist and Sunni religious forces that are bitter enemies of the mullahs.  The Taliban were also unloved by Iran, and there is ample evidence Iran provided important help is the US invasion of Afghanistan.  All this is confusing to Americans nurtured on 25 years of propaganda building up the Islamic regime as one of our top official enemies.  When official ideology conflicts with the actual, pragmatic and short term reasons for policy, the propaganda gets weird indeed.  I hereby bet $1 this is not a prelude to any serious aggression.  Anyway, the US or our Israeli proxies are hardly in a position to launch more than a few midrange airstrikes.

Thank god, the suspense was killing me. If memory serves, the next part is “We didn’t find any WMDs but it was the right thing to do.” After the invasion, of course. Time to invest in Halliburton.
