Sioux Leader to Thwart S.D. Abortion Ban

There is, it turns out, hope for legal abortion in South Dakota—courtesy of Cecilia Fire Thunder, president of the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota.  At the Pine Ridge Reservation, Sioux nation sovereignty means the new ban doesn’t apply, and Fire Thunder has plans to open a Planned Parenthood clinic on tribal land.

Salon:

Today, Broadsheet salutes Cecilia Fire Thunder, first female president of the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota and a longtime advocate of domestic violence prevention and other true family-friendliness. Here’s her response to her state’s abortion ban (which Tim Giago at Indianz.com called “a stupid law against women” created by “a state body made up mostly of white males"):

“To me, it is now a question of sovereignty,” she told Giago. “I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”

Rock. On.

To Cecilia Fire Thunder, President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe:

In your public response to the South Dakota ban on abortion, you made the statement that “Children are sacred, but so are women.” In doing so, you have acknowledged that aborted fetuses are children. This acknowledgement puts you in complete agreement with scientific truth. It is a scientific fact that a human fetus is indeed a human. The Oglala Sioux Tribe Law and Order Code also agrees with you that aborted fetuses are nothing less than slaughtered children. Chapter 5, Section 1.05 of the tribal code clearly states that human life begins at conception and that the interests and welfare of unborn children are to be protected. I respect your honesty and intelligence in recognizing that we are talking about children here. Most people who are pro-abortion get caught-up in a war of semantics and cloud the issue by de-humanizing unborn children.

However, by making such a statement, you are plainly stating that the destruction of our children – whom you have acknowledged to be sacred – should be an option because women are also sacred.

Are you saying that women are more sacred than children? Is this really the Lakota way?

You have implied that the abortion ban in South Dakota infringes upon the sovereignty of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Yet, how can this be, since the sovereign government of the Oglala Sioux Tribe has already established a code that protects the rights of unborn children? By stating publicly that you are going to personally establish a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation, are you not setting yourself up as a dictator? Has the tribe given you the power to disregard the tribal code and take this kind of unilateral action? By making such a brazenly totalitarian comment, is it not you who threatens the sovereignty and self-determination of the Oglala Sioux Tribe?

In your public statements, you have asserted that the white male establishment is once again attempting to limit the rights of women and natives by establishing this abortion ban. Yet, you want to set-up a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Do you not know that nothing exemplifies the “white establishment” and its history of heartless genocide more than a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic? Do you not know that Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger was a white supremacist that viewed abortion as a means of ethnic cleansing? Do you not realize that you are essentially inviting a tool of the racist white establishment onto the reservation to continue its history of violence against Native people? Do you not see that you are becoming a tool of the very same white establishment that you talk against? You are nothing more than today’s equivalent of a native U.S. Army scout who assisted the U.S. government in the attempted destruction of the Lakota way of life. Once again, is it not you that is threatening the sovereignty of the Oglala Lakota Nation?

You are noted for your lamentations about Lakota men and how the Lakota Warrior no longer exists. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Lakota Warrior is alive and well. He may be asleep from time to time, but nothing could awaken him more quickly than an attack on his children. If you and those who believe like you do continue your ruthless campaign of destruction upon the sacred future of this great Lakota nation, expect to see its warriors rise to the occasion to protect the lives of our children.

It has been said that once a Lakota person sets his or her mind to doing something, he or she will become the greatest at it. This has been proven time and time again. And the tradition continues with you. It can be argued that you are the current philosophical leader of the pro-abortion movement in America. You have no doubt placed yourself at the forefront of the national debate on abortion. In doing so, however, you have become the greatest current embarrassment to the Oglala Lakota Nation and to Native America in general. You have also managed – once again – to create confusion and disunity among tribal members. It could be argued that you are also one of the greatest at this.

Clearly, you have gained a great deal of fame and publicity because of your public statements. Some of this publicity is negative and some is positive. Among your supporters, there are many that have stated that they will send you money. In fact, an address containing your name is posted throughout the Internet to which a person can send money to the tribe for the expressed purpose of establishing a Planned Parenthood clinic on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Since Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota has stated that they are not interested in establishing this clinic, what will this money be used for? Who is monitoring this project and the funds that are being raised over the Internet? Is this even legal?

Planned Parenthood has issued a press release stating they have no plans to build a clinic on the rez.
Its good to know there is support there, though.

If you want to mail donations to the reservation, you may do so at:

Oglala Sioux Tribe
ATTN: President Fire Thunder
P. O. Box 2070
Pine Ridge, SD 57770

OR: and this may be preferred, due to mail volume:

ATTN: PRESIDENT FIRE THUNDER
PO BOX 990
Martin, SD 57751

Enclose a letter voicing your support and explaining the purpose of the donation. Bear in mind, the Pine Ridge Res is not exactly dripping with disposeable income, so do consider donating funds directly to the tribe as well as specifically for this effort.

ETA: Make checks out to OST Planned Parenthood Cecelia Fire Thunder. This will ensure that the funds get routed properly.
