Three years of falsely upbeat predictions about the Iraq war are harming the president’s ability to restore confidence in his military operation and his presidency, according to GOP pollsters and strategists, reports the Washington Post.

Washington Post:

Three years of upbeat White House assessments about Iraq that turned out to be premature, incomplete or plain wrong are complicating President Bush’s efforts to restore public faith in the military operation and his presidency, according to pollsters and Republican lawmakers and strategists.

The last two weeks have provided a snapshot of White House optimism that skeptics contend is at odds with the facts on the ground in Iraq.

I’ve also argued that with ongoing discrepancies between what the administration says and the truth on the ground, it’s hard to have confidence in this bunch.

Ever since Operation Shock and Awe started, this member of the public (me) lost faith in this president’s ability to lead during turbulent times.  I read a piece in a magazine that discussed whether political figures should be judged by history or by their contemporaries.  With this administration, history will be the judge.  But, at the same time, it’s times like these that I wish we could do something about this administration as soon as possible.

My question is what is that 40% of Americans who still think Bush is trustworthy hearing that the rest of us aren’t hearing?  I don’t mean to be critical, but I rather believe they would think anybody inhabiting the Oval Office would be trustworthy because he/she inhabits the Oval Office.  Maybe it’s because G_d made Bush president, according to Bush that is, and G_d would never make someone president who wasn’t trustworthy.
