An Afghan Girl’s Tale of Torture and HopePosted on Mar 22, 2006
Pioneering war zone journalist Kevin Sites tells the story of a 12-year-old Afghan girl who was savagely beaten and tortured for years by her in-laws. But wonderfully, the story ends on a note of optimism. (You can even e-mail the girl here. Or at this e-mail address: gulsooma_afghanistan@yahoo.com)

Hi Gulsooma jan,
My heart goes out too Gulsooma, I can’t believe this kind of stuff still happens to this date in our homeland. I am an Afghan Australian born here but I can just imagine what torture you must have gone thru… It just angers me to the breaking point of the lawlessness of our homeland and the governments blind eye on torture and mistreatment of its citizens. The sad thing is this that this kind stuff as been happening for decades and the world is only hearing about it now due to the amount of publicity Afghanistan has received since the attacks of September 11. Rewind 20 years when I was at school in the suburbs of Sydney, most people asked me whats your background? I replied Afghan no one knew where that was, everyone thought it was a country in South America. You ask the same question today and I guarantee youll get a different response. Afghanistan was a forgotten land locked country at the cross roads, I just hope no one forgets about us this time around. I pray for you every day Gulsooma, wish you and every other child in our homeland every success in life… MAY GOD BRING PEACE AND STABILTY TO AFGHANISTAN!
