Truthdig says:

OK, OK, it’s not time to get hysterical yet. This one doesn’t look likely to pass, but…

Four senators have introduced a bill that would allow the NSA to eavesdrop, sans warrant, for up to 45 days. GOP Sen. Arlen Specter objected, saying the law would allow government to “do whatever the hell it wants.”

Oh. Right. What a departure that would be.

Washington Post:

The Bush administration could continue its policy of spying on targeted Americans without obtaining warrants, but only if it justifies the action to a small group of lawmakers, under legislation introduced yesterday by key Republican senators.

The four senators hope to settle the debate over National Security Agency eavesdropping on international communications involving Americans when one of the parties is suspected of terrorist ties. President Bush prompted a months-long uproar when he said that constitutional powers absolve him of the need to seek warrants in such cases, even though the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act requires warrants for domestic wiretaps.

The program, begun in 2001, was first publicized late last year.

I’m astonished that in America, of all places, so many still believe in “the rule of law” and “respect for authority” etc. How much criminal behavior from your elected representatives must you witness before you begin to get the message?

It must be crystal clear to any sentient being that there is only ONE law in America… HE WHO HAS THE BIGGER WEAPON (figuratively or literally) GETS TO SET THE RULES.

There are many loving, sensitive, respectful, fair-minded individuals of integrity in America. I’ve met many of them. But NONE were ever in positions of power. NONE would have lasted a second in a power-over “shootout” which has evolved clearly as the “American way.”

The “Constitution,” “Bill of Rights,” and ALL the other declarations, laws, rules and regulations in place to PROTECT citizens’ safety and privacy from INVASION are considered as “suggested guidelines” or “minor speed bumps” by those you’ve set in authority over you - certainly not hard and fast rules that must be followed.

NOTICE TO ALL AMERICANS WHO REMAIN DREAMY-EYED:
If “authority” wants to wire tap, harrass, stalk, prosecute, incarcerate or even make you “disappear” they can and will do so WITH COMPLETE IMPUNITY, and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it. There is NOTHING stopping “authority” from grabbing you on the street and “Guantanmo-ing you” in secret and forever.

Americans, you have FAR MORE TO FEAR from your own “authorities” than from all the terrorists on the planet! Believe this now or later… your choice.
