Ozone Pollution Is More Harmful Than Realized

Arctic caps will be among the first pieces of ice to melt, should the Earth’s mean temperature rise two degrees.

Ozone, which had been considered a minor player in global climate change, is actually a major factor in the dramatic warming of the Arctic zone, according to NASA.
Worse, scientists are reporting that climate change is “irreversible,” as Arctic sea ice has failed to re-form for the second year in a row.

Ozone pollution in the Northern Hemisphere, churned out by factories and vehicles that burn fossil fuels, is a major factor in the dramatic warming of the Arctic zone,
NASA climate scientists reported on Tuesday.

This finding is surprising, since ozone has been considered a minor player in the study of global climate change, according to Drew Shindell, a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City.
