O’Connor Warns Against ‘Beginnings’ of Dictatorship

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor at an earlier speaking engagement.

“It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings,” former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor told a Georgetown audience, according to an NPR report. (Hat tip: Huff Po)

Philadelphia Daily News:

NPR’s Nina Totenberg aired an amazing story this morning about a talk that just-resigned Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor gave at Georgetown University. The first woman to serve on the High Court wouldn’t allow her actual words to be broadcast, and that’s a shame, because—based on Totenberg’s report—every American needs to hear what she said. The Reagan appointee who became a moderate and an American icon—Bush v. Gore notwithstanding—all but named names in thinly veiled attacks on former House majority leader Tom DeLay and Texas Sen. John Cornyn, and ended with a stunning warning.

We transcribed some of the report, which you can listen to here. (UPDATE: Here’s a full transcript from Raw Story.)

O’Connor told her Georgetown audience that judges can make presidents, Congress and governors “really really mad,” and that if judges don’t make people angry, they aren’t doing their job. But she said judicial effectiveness is “premised on the notion that we won’t be subject to retaliation for our judicial acts.” While hailing the American system of rights and privileges, she noted that these don’t protect the judiciary, that “people do.”

It’s sad to see Sandra leaving but she has personal things to take care of.  She is right, though, we are edging towards a dictatorship.  In my almost half century of living, I never could have envisioned this country sinking as low as it has in the past 8 years.  I though the Regan years were as bad as it could get…

People that care about the phrase “We the people...” should start speaking out loudly and attending protests.  I’ve never been so angry about my own government!  The George W. Bush’s Administration and the Republican party is doing a horrible number on this country.  And the feckless Democrats are standing doing nothing.

So far we’ve got:  An illegal/immoral/fruitless War; record gov’t deficits; a president who prays about every decision & says he gets his ideas straight from God; record corporate profits by oil companies; out-of-control governmental spending of OUR money; wire tapping it’s own citizens; sanctioned torture; locking up people without charges or normal rights; dismantling of environmental laws; large-scale corruption; and I could go on and on and on.  And they impeached Clinton because of a PERSONAL matter!

What is it going to take for people to start protesting in the streets???  Personally, I’m ready to move to Canada but they don’t want me (us).

I was amazed to read this story Monday morning (03/13) on Common Dreams [based on an article and commentary in The Guardian (London)- on the web]. Where are the main-stream media (as if I didn’t know - they’re just as complicit as the neocons). Also the story Publishedm March 10, 2006 by Nina Totenberg --Via NPR. Rush transcript by RAW STORY at its website:  <http://rawstory.com/news/2006/Retired_Supreme_Court_Jus tice_hits_attacks_0310.html>

Also, except for a passing reference or two, progressive radio is also keeping mum. What gives? If you have any information or ideas, please let us know.

Truly, Sandra Day O’Connor should have stepped up to the plate during the Florida recount...but it was her realization after that debacle that the system had in fact, been corrupted and co-opted by the Neocons and the Bush Family.

Many have suggested that the only chance to save the Republic is for all concerned Americans to mount a general strike for two business days...preferably a Thursday and Friday, for example, then assemble at the nearest government centers with placards and signs demanding the removal and prosecution of Bush, Cheney and other guilty parties who have supported essentially a coup detat as well as a world power grab.  We cannot wait until the next “election” because let’s face it, we no longer have free and fair elections.  I believe many Democrats in the Congress are complicit with this conspiracy, and all traitors to the Constitution should be tried for high crimes and face the appropriate penalties that traitors traditionally must face.  Blind folds are a humane accessory to these proceedings.

If anyone out there thinks that this is just an extreme point of view, a joke, or distortion, they need to read “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” right away.  There is now a growing number of people who believe that Osama Bin Laden, friend to the Bush family, and paid CIA operative in Afghanistan might in fact know how deep the conspiracy goes, and that his Al Q’aida operation was sponsored by US intelligence to create a massive “push the public into panic reaction” terror threat with the 9/11 events.  For a brilliant terror organization, they have done less than Boy Scouts on Beer in terms of subsequent activities in the US, and I cannot for a moment think that our security is so good as to prevent even the slightest act of terror in over 6 years.  What gives?  They could send four guys with automatic weapons, ammo and grenades into a major US shopping mall, and create total hell-on-earth for an hour or two.  Al Q’aida could also strike directly at Israel, but they do not.  Why?  Airliners could be easily shot out of the sky with shoulder launched missiles.  But they fly in safety.  Some genius terror network.  But we keep being told there are “credible threats” and to be constantly prepared (read “afraid") for some dire incident, like nuking Walmart.  Wake up folks, the new day is dawning, and it’s going to be a dark, dark age, if we don’t stop it right now.

Justice O’Connor joins a very short list of Republicans who offer sugercoated criticism of this administration long after they leave their jobs. Governor Whitman left the administration and now in her book complains that “her” Republican party has been hijacked by ideologues who threaten public health through environmental pillaging.  If she really wanted to make a difference she should have made that point in your resignation letter when voters would notice.

Now we have O’Connor talking about the erosion of liberty and yet she still resigned and allowed W to name her replacement.  I am not impressed with these symbolic and guilt-ameliorating speeches.  The bottom line is she handed the keys over to the dictator and now feels better because she scolded him?  Apparently even some Supreme Court justices don’t notice that this is the most political, corrupt and power hungry administration to ever seize office.

Sadly my kids are going to have to live in this country for the next eighty years long after O’Connor is gone.

I’m disgusted by these symbolic victories

And Eisenhower warned us that the militarial-industrial complex should be dismantled before it was too late…

Guess what.

Its too late. Just look at Haliburton and Iraq, and always remember that their subsidiary Brown and Root originally had no Kellog in front of them when they got the Tonkin Gulf deal from Johnson.

Now we have a former Supreme Court justice warning us that a Bush dictatorship should be avoided.

Maybe its too late for that one, too.

Lest we forget, it was Bush II who said “a dictatorship would be easier” and he has diligently worked to achieve that very status for himself.  He pays lip service to “working together” which translated means do it my way or else.

I only hope our country can survive the remainder of his Presidency.

Do you ever get the feeling that many are talking but few are listening, and those who do listen, often don’t hear, and many of those who do hear, don’t care?

Eisenhower warned clearly against the military-industrial complex. Not enough listened/cared and so the economy is now controlled almost completely by those in charge of industry.

Day-O’Connor is now clearly warning that the country is poised at the top of the slippery slope to dictatorship. Let’s observe whether enough people will listen, hear and care enough to act to prevent the inevitable.

The biggest mistake the people could possibly now make is to believe it couldn’t happen in America. But Americans have made big mistakes before… they elected GWB not once but TWICE!  Enjoy!

Let’s be happy she’s off the Supreme Court. What a worthless “judge” - and I use the term “judge” only in the context of her appointment.

I’ll be posting about her Monday after 12 noon PST.

Alas, she is too late! There is only one branch of government now, and its merger proceedings with the fourth branch are in the goebbels stage.
