Bill Clinton Advised UAE on Ports Deal

Financial Times:

Bill Clinton, former US president, advised top officials from Dubai two weeks ago on how to address growing US concerns over the acquisition of five US container terminals by DP World.

It came even as his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, was leading efforts to derail the deal.

Mr Clinton, who this week called the United Arab Emirates a “good ally to America”, advised Dubai’s leaders to propose a 45-day delay to allow for an intensive investigation of the acquisition, according to his spokesman.

Full story

Truthdig says: Clinton did this at the same time his wife was railing against the deal—just in case anyone mistakenly assumes that the N.Y senator takes all her cues from the ex-prez.

Weellll now, that Hillary doesn’t take her ques from Bill doesn’t necessarily follow from the evidense presented. I can think of at least two other reasons for the same scenario without even flexing a brain cell.

The first is that Hillary’s opposition is just for show. I suspect the same is true of most of the Republican “nay-sayers” and for exactly the same reason. They want to distance themselves from a lame-duck president’s unpopular policies while making themselves appear on the side of “concerned citizens.” Hillary has been voting right along with the republicans to support the war and the Patriot Act and Bush appointees. The only reason she is not a republican is because that was not the “with-it” thing to be when she was in College.

The second reason could be to help Bill land a nice fat fee as a consultant. If she opposes and he is hired to lobby for the opposed - well, I would say he would definately have the inside track on getting an appointment to discuss the issues with her wouldn’t you think?

But, this still doesn’t mean I think she takes all her ques from Bill. Actually, being from their homestate and having been a Clinton watcher for years, I always thought it was the other way around.

I am disgusted with Bill Clinton! First he pals around with Dubya’s daddy and now he’s buds with people who supported and partied with Bin Laden. Looks like he is emulating the Bush dynasty. Forget it, Bill. You’ll never really be accepted.
