When Politics Defeat SciencePosted on Mar 1, 2006A Washington Post commentary by Susan F. Wood: Since my resignation six months ago as assistant commissioner of women’s health at the Food and Drug Administration, I have been traveling around the country meeting with men and women, fellow scientists and health care professionals. I have shared my concerns that our federal health agencies seem increasingly unable to operate independently and that this lack of independence compromises their mission of promoting public health and welfare. At every stop I am reminded that whether it is the environment, energy policy, science education or public health, the American public expects our government to make the best decisions based on the best available evidence. Time and again it can be documented that the conservatives don’t care about babies. If they cared about life we would not have the death penalty. If they cared about babies we would have free prenatal care. If they cared about children we would have free health care and preschool.
This issue is not about children. It is about punishing women for having sex without their permission. I have heard a friend say “well, one abortion is okay, but after that they should take some responsibility.” I say they are trying to take responsibility.
Who is punished? Only poor women. Because of course rich women have platinum cards. If their birth control fails or they fail their birth control, they take a lovely vacation to say Thailand. A bit of sun bathing a facial, an abortion, a light lunch and some shopping on the way home.
Only poor women will be affected by the people who would force women to have children they do not want. Poor women and the society who will pay for their lack of control over their bodies.
