McCain: Port Sale Overblown Since UAE is Freer Than ChinaђPosted on Feb 27, 2006Think Progress: This morning on ABC’s This Week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) argued that concern over the Dubai port sale is misplaced since the UAE is freer than that beacon of liberty, China.
According to the Freedom House’s 2006 Global Survey of Political Rights and Civil Liberties, China scores the worst rating (7) for political rights and a 6 for civil liberties. Overall, it receives a rating of “Not Free.” It’s actually a feat to be less free than China—only 7 countries of 192 do it. Previous item: Hannity to Raise Funds for Santorum? Senator McCain, What the People’s Republic of China does and does not do is not the issue here. Shame on you for attempting to redirect the inquiry. I thought that you were above that when you stood against this current president in opposition to torture.
Report thisThe issue here, is whether the U.S. Ports should be managed and operated by the U.A.E., a foreign nation. The narrow view can be expanded to include any foreign nation. It is absurd to think that our ports should be. P & O is a foreign government operated enterprise. Unacceptable. The reasons are self evident, in fact, the additonal concerns that the U.A.E. has proximately been linked to terrorists exacerbates those concerns. It is beyond the pale to think that our current White House Administration sees no harm, nor unintended consequences, of such acts including selling access to our ports to a sovereign foreign nation. Get real. The rest of us have.
I hope that you recall, at this point, you are the republican party’s only hope. And, currently you have no competition. Should you continue to support this simple president, and his staff, by proclaiming that this deal to sell the management of our ports to another country is just fine, well, I suspect that any support for future offices that you may anticipate will simply evaporate with the public opinion that you are in error.

Bush is a victim of his very effective fear and anger machine that has been very successful for the far right in setting their own agenda. I oppose foreign port management for other reasons. First it adds to our absurd trade imbalance and more jobs are going to foreign countries.
Next UAE has jailed 12 men for being gay. Bush condones and practices imprisoning innocent victims. We encourage ignoring human rights when we deal with countries that ignore those rights.
To compete with foreign competition for jobs, it is necessary to provide our services for less and ignore the depletion of the world’s resources and the polluting of the world’s air and water. We must return to 16 hour days and seven day work weeks without any worker protection, including health care.
