BBC: Your mobile phone is a beacon - a radio transmitter in a box. Therefore it is possible to trace the signal and work out where it is.

There are now several web companies which will track your friends’ and family’s phones for you, so you always know where they are.

But just how safe is it to make location details available online?

Not that it matters much.... “authorities” will use legal or illegal (doesn’t matter to them) technologies and info-sharing to find just about anyone they want to find… except Osama bin Laden, of course.

And perhaps they don’t even want to actually find HIM… why? Who knows for sure? I’d start by following the dollar. Just how much is being made by whom in the search for bin Laden? I suspect it’s MILLIONS by “friends” of the “administration.” Go ahead… call me a jaded old cynic!

You can be “found” if you connect to society in any way. So why worry about your cellphone signal?
