NYT: BAGHDAD, Iraq, Feb. 23—At least 138 Iraqis, mostly Sunni Arabs and including some clerics, were killed in central Iraq Wednesday and today in the maelstrom of sectarian violence that followed the insurgent bombing of one of the country’s most sacred Shiite shrines, Iraqi officials said. Seven American soldiers also died in attacks, the American military said today. Full Story

Reuters: BAGHDAD - Forty-seven people were killed in Baghdad in the 24 hours since the bombing of a major Shi’ite shrine sparked the worst sectarian violence the country has seen since the fall of Saddam Hussein, police said on Thursday.

Gunmen sprayed a Sunni mosque in the city of Baquba, northeast of the capital, killing one person in the latest of dozens of such incidents that have left religious and political leaders scrambling to halt a descent into all-out civil war.

Three journalists working for Al-Arabiya television were found shot dead after being attacked while filming in Samarra, where the bloodless but highly symbolic bombing of the Golden Mosque at dawn on Wednesday provoked widespread protest.

Juan Cole: I worry that Iranian anger will boil over as a result of this bombing of a Shiite millenarian symbol.

Both Sunnis and Americans will be blamed. Very bad.

“Is it really THAT important that we RULE THE WORLD?” -  R. A. Earl

No, but it IS THAT IMPORTANT that the US Dollar be the ONLY currency used as payment for oil purchases.

Dollar Hegemony.

That is why Saddam had to go after he agreed to accept Euros in Sept 2000.

That is why BushCo tried to topple Hugo Chavez after he merely entertained the thought of doing so.

That is why Iran WILL BE BOMBED very soon. And don’t be surprised if a cruise missile strays off-course, right into the Iran Oil Bourse, scheduled to open March 21st, to trade Iranian oil priced in Euros.

If we in the “West” had a brain amongst us, we’d pack up, come home and stay here. I mean how many wars do we have to LOSE before we get it through our thick skulls that perhaps we’re not anywhere near as “great” as we think we are? Is it really THAT important that we RULE THE WORLD?

Folks in other parts of the world THINK, VALUE and FEEL differently than we do about almost everything… we in the west haven’t a clue what’s going on in the Muslim mind most of the time… hell, we haven’t a clue what WE’RE thinking half the time!

The peoples of the “ancient world” have enjoyed a warring lifestyle since before recorded history and the only thing being accomplished by western interference is now the warriors have a few more things to complain about and a few more targets to blow up.

Besides… let’s get real… the “West” has more problems right at home than we can deal with. How about just minding our own affairs for a change and leaving others to do the same?

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to predict civil war. Or even an Arabist.

Not that the neocons who planned this debacle care very much. Most of them have moved on to other cushy jobs.

Of course, in a democracy people get the kind of government they deserve. That doesn’t say much for us Americans, does it?
