Navy Warned Pentagon on TorturePosted on Feb 20, 2006Navy Counsel Issued Warning On Torture AP: The Navy’s general counsel warned Pentagon officials two years before the Abu Ghraib prison scandal that circumventing international agreements on torture and detainees’ treatment would invite abuse, according to a published report. Legal theories granting the president the right to authorize abuse despite the Geneva Conventions were unlawful, dangerous and erroneous, then-General Counsel Alberto J. Mora advised officials in a secret memo. The 22-page document was obtained by the New Yorker for an article in its Feb. 27 issue. Thank you Mr. Mora ! You are a man of courage and conviction. Maybe your advice, albeit three years later, will reach the general public and congressional leaders. Maybe your words of courage will convict all Americans to stand against this current administration’s policy to approve torture. Hopefully, other military leaders will now rise up and say that Mr. Alberto Gonzales, Attorney General, President Bush, Mr. Cheney, Mr. Rumsfeld, et al have caused enough injustice and disparagement to our values. My heart breaks for my country and for the mean hurtful acts that have caused others harm and will no doubt hurt our own citizens in the end. Thank you for standing up and allowing this information to proceed to the public.
