“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” runs on CNN outside the United States.

Truthdig says: OK, all you expatriates probably already knew this, but Truthdig didn’t: “The Daily Show” runs on CNN International outside the U.S.

Think about that: Millions (perhaps billions) of foreigners get Jon Stewart’s version of America on a relatively straight-news-oriented channel. Depending on how you feel about Stewart’s sensibility, that’s either wonderful or troubling. (This snippet of news comes near the end of a hilarious article about Stewart’s upcoming gig at the Oscars.

AP:

NEW YORK—Jon Stewart just won the Heisman—the comedians’ version. As host of the Academy Awards, Stewart joins an elite group that includes Steve Martin, Billy Crystal, Bob Hope and Johnny Carson.

“It doesn’t mean you’re going to have a good pro career, or even do well in the bowl game,” Stewart says, sitting in his Manhattan office behind a desk cluttered with papers. “But to get to that point means something. Now you’re in the club.”

Membership requires entertaining a television audience of more than 40 million, plus getting laughs from some of the most powerful people in Hollywood.

CNN International is very different than CNN in North America. From what I remember, it’s much better. Coverage has more depth and it is actually somewhat balanced. It has to compete with likes of the BBC and other decent news services.

Yes, arrived in China just over a year ago for editorial gig and was surprised to see the *Global Edition* of Daily Show on CNN International.

But that is a weekly Sunday night spot of about 22 minutes, repeating some segments from prior week, with Stewart providing a brief intro (and apologizing for his nation’s behavior, on the first one I caught).

The only way expats in my current region can get the actual shows is via bittorrent.  Apologies to intellectual property absolutists, but consider that the Daily Show is about the hottest bittorrent worldwide.  (The nature of bittorrent programs is that you can identify each downloader by country.)

And globally tens of thousands jump on this show as soon as it is available.

In this way, with much broader applications, we may convince a large part of the thinking world that we are not collectively completely off our rocker as a nation.

And, in ways like this, the country in which I now reside may be changed for the better.

Forget Google’s keyword muzzling.  There is much more happening here.

So what are the ratings.  What feedback has CNN been getting.  Surely the Administration is not happy with this - or do they know?  CNN?  who knew!

I think it’s a good thing, for the most part, that Jon Stewart airs internationally. In a world where the American reputation continues to suffer due to decisions that our leaders make, it helps that Stewart’s comedy shows that not all Americans are buying into the ideology of this administration. In fact, most Americans aren’t buying it and haven’t been for years. It might just save us from complete international disgrace.
