Girl Will Hang for Killing Would-Be RapistPosted on Feb 17, 2006Katha Pollitt, from The Nation: Just relax and take it if a rapist attacks you in Iran. If you fight back, you may find yourself sentenced to death, like 18-year-old Nazanin. Oh, but wait, I forgot, if you do get raped and don’t have four male witnesses to the actual physical act, you can be imprisoned, flogged or stoned for having sex outside of marriage. Here’s the shocking story, from Iran Focus via Feministing.... Truthdig says: An 18-year-old Iranian has been sentenced to death for killing one of three men who tried to rape her and her niece. The Nation sheds light on this shocking travesty. But before you work up a xenophobic rage, remember that America executes the underage and mentally retarded. I agree with the above comment. There is absolutely no comparison between killing adolescent perpetrators of crime and adolescent VICTIMS of crime.
Not that I agree with our execution of minors—I don’t—but I can’t believe you tried to compare the two. Come on.

How can you in good conscious compare a victim defending herself from a violent crime to a person who commits a violent crime? A violent crime is not any less harmful if commited by an underaged or mentally impaired person. Violence is violence no matter who the perpetrator is.
This poor, unfortunate girl is a victim of not only horror of the attempted rape against her person and her niece, but also from the ignorance and religious barbarianism of the Iranian government. Instead of sentencing her to death for defending herself and her niece, she should be given a medal for bravery.
By the way, what happened to the three male attackers? Were they tried and convicted of a crime in that barbaric country or is attacking two young girls accepted as reasonable male behavior?
