Gore Vidal’s State of the UnionPosted on Feb 1, 2006Gore Vidal (via Democracy Now!): Today, the 31st of January, in the hallowed year, election year, of ‘06, could be a memorable day if we all do our part, which is simply to concentrate, among other things, and do perhaps what a couple of groups have decided would be useful for the President, I guess his State of the Union. We might give him some idea of our state, which is one of great dissatisfaction with him and his regime. And there’s talk of perhaps demonstrating in front of the Capitol or here or there around the country to show that the union is occupied by people who happen to be patriots. And patriots do not like this government. This is an unpatriotic government. This is a government that deals openly in illegalities, whether it is attacking a country which has done us no harm, two countries—Iraq and Afghanistan—because we now believe, not in declaring war through Congress as the Constitution requires, but through the President. ‘Well, I think there are some terrorists over there, and I think we got to bomb them, huh? We’ll bomb them.’ Now, we’ve had idiots as presidents before. He’s not unique. But he’s certainly the most active idiot that we have ever had. | streaming media and transcript at Democracy Now! “The State of the Union is strong,” Bush said...more BS from the White House with “B” standing for Bush...just another meaningless stale speech filled with platitudes and nonsensical defense of American imperialism. On the contrary, our Union is threatened by more and more enemies our country is enraging worldwide...while the American people struggle financially to have the basics.
Rather than addressing any real problems with real solutions, Bush simply and predictably defends his war on Iraq, and justifies attacks on our civil liberties...he speaks of democracy and freedom while he and his gang continue, in my opinion, to try and eliminate it within our own nation.
We’re still a nation with 36 million in poverty; a nation whose education system lags far behind other nations’; a nation without healthcare for all its citizens; a nation that cold-bloodedly puts its own citizens to death in the name of “justice,” and sends our military men and women to fight wars in parts of the world that are no threat directly to us.
As in years past, Gore Vidal’s tradition of delivering his State of the Union gives us the truth: “...patriots do not like this government. This is an unpatriotic government.”
We the people are no longer represented in this country. We have two political parties with little difference at all. Both are corporate controlled--the American farmer, the American worker, the American family, the American homeless, the American middle and lower class...have virtually no one representing them.
As Vidal so eloquently expressed, “...it is time we objected,” and object strongly. Yes, Bush and his gang must get the message from we the people that as Vidal says “We’ve had enough of you. Go home to Crawford...”
But we do not have an honorable man such as Tiberius as our leader. We have an egotist. Egotists do not admit mistakes, much less correct them.
Vidal’s stance”...let the powers that be know that back of them, there’s something called “We the people of the United States,” and all sovereignty rest in us...” is the truth we must continue to voice. Not just on a day, but each and every day.
Where are those of courage? Where are those devoted to truth? All I see are characters that bounce back and forth...it’s all a political game for so many, their party, their careers. Neither Democratic or Republican politicians offer much hope. What we need are men of consistency...those devoted to the Constitution. At every level of government, this is what we must work toward. The protests over the past few days should be only the start.
Gore Vidal has consistently spoken the truth of what is occurring in our country, that consistency spans many years...his voice must be heard by even more.
I urge all visitors to TruthDig to share its url links to Vidal’s “President Jonah” and Vidal’s State of the Union with those you know...call in to radio talk shows and share it...emphasize his books (such as Imperial America, Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace, Dreaming War, etc.) on both your local and national call-in talk shows, share it on websites, write letters to the editor. Do it now. Mention the name Gore Vidal and strongly recommend his books on talk shows and the talk show lines often fill up with highly emotionally vitriolic attacks against Vidal and/or the caller...they cannot dispute his ideas with facts so they resort to hatred. Their hatred is a clear indicator of how much they fear truth and thus they verbally attack him and anyone who recommends his books and ideas. Vidal’s message is powerful. If it reflects your own, be strong in sharing it.
Fear controls most people. Say no to your fears, and boldly speak the truth. It’s not about one day or one protest, it’s about the way you choose to live your life....as a fighter for truth or as a victim.
Yes it would make “a lot of difference if millions of Americans just say, ‘We are fed up! We don’t like you. We don’t like what you’re doing to the country and what you have done to the country.”
Personally I see no change happening in America if Bush is not impeached; or if our entire process of elections isn’t radically changed....without either happening means come next election it just happens all over again.
How do we realize/actualize Vidal’s ideas? Each of us must incorporate what we learn from him into action...that means speaking and actively working for it right in the communities we live...stop caring about what other’s are going to think...Speak, write...tell all. Voting for the lesser of two evils is becoming extremely repulsive to me. We the people must make it possible for good men to have a chance to run--free from the two controlling parties. We must demand electoral finance reform, we must demand to get something back in proportion to the taxes we pay, we must demand that if you hold political office you vote according to your constituency.
Gore Vidal has stated the truth for decades. He’s always been right before, and he will be right about our future unless we begin to actually create real change and reform. Voice what you have learned from Vidal every chance you get...do it now and never cease.
Gore Vidal, thank you for your continued activism...your outspokenness...and your call to each of us to make a difference.

And Lead Us Not Into Armageddon, For Thine Is the Evil
After hearing the State of the Union address we conclude that the president is well-versed in Bible-speak, Bible-speak--where the good of a god’s words is as gold as strip-mined dust.
And now a review of Bible-speak to hearten us, for then shall we know just how much we are one nation “under God.”
When the president talks about hope, he speaks the lan-guage of endless war.
When the god talks about mercy, he means visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and the chil-dren’s children to the third and fourth generations.
When the president talks about equal justice under the law, he means the exclusion of the gay community.
When the god talks about one law for the stranger and the home-born, he does not mean the stranger is afforded the law’s protections, only that he is under the subjection of the rule of law.
When the president talks about doing his part to work with the two parties, he does not mean he will allow the “politicians in Washington DC” to influence when the troops come home.
When the god commands his congregation to be holy, he does not mean equally holy in command as the band that gath-ered with Korah to wage a rebellion against unchecked power discovered.
When the president talks about how democracies respect the rights of its citizens, he in the same tone champions his illegal breach of the right to be free from warrantless surveillance.
When the god talks about loving your neighbor as your-self, he does not mean you are to spare him or conceal him, but that you are to lay your hand upon him and be the first to stone him to death.
When the president links corrupt politicians who bribe their way into positions of power to judges who rule the ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional, he as good as says ‘Thou shalt find them equally abominable.’
When the god condemns other gods for accepting the live sacrifice of children while he himself commands his own peo-ple to surrender their first-born to the fire in his name, he is a hypocrite, and we shall call them both abominable for their hypocrisy and inhumanity.
When the president addresses Members of Congress and instructs them that however they “feel about the decisions and debates of the past, our nation has only one option: We must keep our word, defeat our enemies, and stand behind the American military in this vital mission,” he means for them to never again mention how he attacked Iraq under false pre-tenses.
When the god leads the people out of Egypt, he hides from them the truth that they will be fighting his battles for him. So that they can’t turn back to Egypt, he leads them through the way of the wilderness. It is only after he gets them in so deep they can’t retreat that he tells them they will be fighting a long and drawn out war--”from gen-eration to generation.”
When the president speaks directly to the citizens of Iran and says, “America respects you, and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom,” he means, “We’ll be invading your borders soon.”
When the god, through Moses, spells out the laws of war to the folks who fight against “evil,” he tells them, “When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then pro-claim peace unto it.”
Iraq, be warned, the president of America has declared peace against you.
When the president declares “the United States will not retreat from the world, and we will never surrender to evil,” he is speaking straight from the god’s mouth: “Because I have spoken, I have purposed, and will not re-pent, neither will I turn back from it.”
When the president speaks the Lord’s language, and he speaks it fluently, know that he means to lead us into the death valley of the apocalypse.

Thanks again, Mr. Vidal!
Your words, once again, are so full of truth and conscience right that it humbles me.
Report thisGeorge W. “DumbAss” has lied to us yet again . . . Hail to the Thief!!
Mr. Vidal, why do I get this sinking feeling that we’re all doomed? Where does this merry-go-round from Hell let us off? This egomaniacal so-called “Leader” of ours is sounding more and more like a certain German leader did some 70 years ago! Last night he spoke of more financing supporting education, and this morning congress cuts millions from student-loan programs and lower level education benefits! (He’s the “Edjumacation” President . . . Let no child get ahead program!)
Mr. Vidal, as always your reason and insights are a beacon of truth and wisdom . . . Do me a favor? Live forever! (So YOU can run for president in 2008!!!) Your friend, Jim Slater
