WE GO IN THE FINAL HOUR, TO THE MOST IMPORTANT LINE OF BATTLE: THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES

by Harry Belafonte

On January 20-22, 2006, the International Commission of Inquiry on Crimes Against Humanity Committed by the Bush Administration (www.bushcommission.org) held an unprecedented citizen’s tribunal at Riverside Church in New York City to examine, with rigor and substance, whether the Bush Administration is guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.  Internationally-known expert witnesses and whistle blowers, including former commander of Abu Ghraib prison Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, former British ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray, and former UN arms inspector Scott Ritter, testified in the areas of war, torture, global environment, global health, and Katrina.  The Commission’s summary findings will be released on February 2, 2006 at the National Press Club in Washington DC at 9:30am.

The following remarks by Harry Belafonte opened this historic session.

Thank you very much.  I would to first express my great sense of privilege, and opportunity to be part of this evening’s tribunal and what we will be seeing and hearing.  I would like to also extend my respects to the panel and to the tasks you have before you, and what we will be hearing.

It is most gratuitous that this should be taking place at the end of a week of celebration of the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This nation has never, ever produced a greater citizen, who stood and still stands for the principles for why we are all gathered here: the pursuit of justice, the pursuit of human rights, the pursuit of human dignity.

Theodore Roosevelt once said that when the powers of state, that having been mandated to reach out and to protect the interest of the people, begin to usurp the Constitution and undermine our laws, that it is the responsibility of the citizens to rise up and to speak against this process.  And to in fact insist upon the changing of the guard, the changing of regime. (Applause)  And those, those citizens who fail to hear that call, in fact should be charged with patriotic treason. (Applause)  I think none gathered here this evening can be so charged.

It is important when all the instruments of government collapse, we go in the final hour, to the most important line of battle: the people themselves. The people of this nation, I think, and I know it, are awake, and are being more awakened every day. They are hearing and sensing the danger that sits on the horizon. Looking at the international oppressions that we are a part of, looking at how we have violated international humanity and law, one day this tribunal I hope, will reach out, and in its investigation look at the oppression and illegal experiences people in this nation are experiencing themselves.

On 9/11, we were all stunned by the tragic events that took place when the Twin Towers collapsed, and this terrorism was put upon our people. Two thousand lost their lives.  Two thousand who were innocent, two thousand who did not cause war.  And we said they were terrorists and we should hunt them down and bring them to justice.  Tell me, where for you does the line blur?

When a nation as powerful as this, the most powerful in the history of human existence, and those who have dubiously come to power and who are reigning over the will of this nation, when they lie and mislead the citizens of this country, when they put before us fear and then govern by terrorism—where does the line blur for you?  When our sons and daughters are sent to die in foreign battlefields, each day we claim the lives of tens and thousands of innocent men, women, and children, in other places—where for you does terrorism end and where does it begin, and who are the terrorists? (Applause).

Those who would choose to detract [from] the real meaning of this tribunal, the real meaning of this people’s moment, would suggest to you that we are somehow perhaps irrelevant. Well, I guess Paul Revere was considered at one point irrelevant, when he called for the alarm against the red coats.

I know very well that at the beginning, Dr. Martin Luther King was considered irrelevant. I know that there are so many that have called for the awakening of our citizens to look at what is happening to us and to seize our rights to put us back into democratic governance. Always in the beginning, we are minimalized, marginalized and relegated to the dustbins of history.  We have prevailed before and we will prevail again.

I am honored to be a part of this process, and anything I can do to help broaden its base, to help broaden its inquiry, and to help save the soul of our nation, I welcome the opportunity and I will so serve. Thank you.

I don’t know if Mr. Belafonte has any political aspirations but if he does he would have my complete support. It is unfortunate that so many of our “leaders” in the Democratic party are such spineless wastes when it comes to speaking out against the criminals who are running this country like it was their own personal Mafia family. It became glaringly obvious to me many years ago (1994 to be exact) that the days of collegial bi-partisanship in government was dead. The Republicans made it clear that their win at all costs strategy and total disregard for the working class and the poor (and the truth) would not tolerate opposing ideas or opinions. Since the start of the so-called “Republican Revolution” and the horribly misnamed “Contract With America” (it should have been more aptly called “The Contract On America”) these corrupt, rich, self-serving crooks have used every means at their disposal to defame, discredit and outright lie about their political opponents to continue to win re-election. And they haven’t just used what Al Franken calls the tactic of “Fear, Smears and Queers” against Democrats. Look at the 2000 campaign and the Karl Rove engineered swift-boating of John McCain in South Carolina. After the resignation of Nixon the zealots were furious and swore revenge. And slowly, over time, they built a propaganda machine that would have made Hermann Goering green with envy. Think tanks funded by ultra-right wealthy elite (Project For A New American Century, American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation). People like Richard Mellon Scaife and Rupert Murdoch. They began to poison airwaves and the print media with the likes of Rush Limbaugh and David Horowitz and have now morphed into the mainstream media with the entire Fox network and so-called journalists like Tim Russert and Chris Matthews. Considering the Puritan frenzy that Republicans whipped themselves into over the lies Bill Clinton told about a blow job, I can only imagine what a state they would be in if this were a Democratic President committing seriously illegal acts and trampling all over the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Right after the impeachment, they would be turning him (or her) over to the International Criminal Court (suitably bound and gagged of course) to stand trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity! It is time for Democrats to give up this fantasy of joining hands across the aisle with the neo-cons and singing a rousing chorus of “Kumbaya”. The Republicans have become street-fighters while the Dems are still abiding by the Marquis of Queensbury rules of politics, this has to end. It’s time for the glove to come off, actually it’s long overdue.

I too am appalled at the lies, crimes, butchering, murdering, stealing, revenging, disgusting acts of this administration.  I am ashamed to be an American. I am ashamed of the actions that this country has taken to achieve its selfish, murdering goals. I am ashamed of and have great anguish for my country.  George W. Bush is killing us and what we used to stand for.
Impeachment is much too good for him and his band of narrow minded ideologues.
There is no avenue for Americans to stop this incredible downward spiral.  The press has abandoned the truth, the congress has abandoned it’s principals and the constitution.  We are a country on the brink of imploding with evil. It is no wonder other countries hate us.  We are the problem.  We are also the terrorists. Most Americans feel what I say and know what I mean. We are no longer a democracy by the people for the people.  We have no checks, no balances, no voice.
Thank you very much for destroying America, George Bush, the worst, most ignorant, incompetent President ever in the history of the world.
I grieve,

I saw Mr. Belafonte on CNN being interviewed by Wolf Blitzer and was very impressed with how Mr. Belafonte handled himself.  Blitzer tried every cheap trick in the book to set Harry up to look like a kook, but Harry was very skillful and stayed on message.  He did a great job and pulled no punches in his view of the Bush Administration’s mishandleing of pretty much everything.  I wish we had politicians with this kind of courage.  People who were not so concerned with protecting their political asses.

Yes sir!
Over 2300 Americans died and 10’s of thousands of Iraqis dead.  What the hell is the U.S. military doing in another country? Killing people in their own country!
The neo-cons did this as an alliance of extreme right wing left over cold war warriors and the jewish-israeli lobby.
America’s soldiers, sons and daughters dying young and getting maimed while the neo-cons are enjoying life and planning continuing decision making for the American family, which is getting shafted.
Perle, Kagan, Feith, Wolfowitz; where are they and why do we pay them to send our boys to die?
