Kerry Calls for Alito Filibuster

CNN: WASHINGTON—The Senate’s top Republican decided Thursday to force a showdown on Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito early next week, with the two Democratic senators from Massachusetts pushing to block a vote.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist filed a motion to cut off debate on the Alito nomination after his Democratic counterpart, Minority Leader Harry Reid, objected to a move by GOP leaders to schedule a final vote on his confirmation Monday afternoon.

Truthdig says:

Pulling this off would be the ultimate hat trick. Republicans reportedly need only one more Democrat on their side to force a vote. story

People for the American Way are supplying a form letter urging key senators to join Kerry in his filibuster.

I urge everyone to fill out the form letter from the American Way (above link) urging key sneators to support a filibuster against the nomination of Alito.  Our democracy is at stake and it is time for the democrats to stop acting like republicans.

A 24-Hour Democratic Party hotline is needed immediately:

I am astounded our elected Democrat Senators have voice mail boxes that are all full this evening (Thursday night, 1/26/06).  The Democratic Party should immediately create a 24-hour answering hotline to learn constituents’ opinions about the Alito nomination.

“Lack of anticipation” would be a damning indictment on their qualifications to be our advocates and representatives about the future of the US.  A temporary call center hear from constiuents about Alito was likely forseen and discussed.  Why would such a low cost measure be dismissed?

I fear DEMs are trying have it both ways, a) get by without a gutter fight with the REPUBs, and b) avoid opening the door to hear about our sky-rocketing disenchantment with Democratic Party.

“Full voice mail boxes” may turn out to be the battle cry of a new national third party.  The other excuse, “culpable deniability” was long ago used up.

Since all Senators’ voice mail boxes filled up so quickly, why did many Democratic Party organizations and websites tell us to CALL and FAX Senators, and to not email our opinions to Senators?
