Targeted UCLA Prof Speaks OutPosted on Jan 22, 2006LAT: “UCLA STUDENTS: Do you have a professor who just can’t stop talking about President Bush, about the war in Iraq, about the Republican Party, or any other ideological issue that has nothing to do with the class subject matter? It doesn’t matter whether this is a past class, or your class from this coming winter quarter. If you help expose the professor, we’ll pay you for your work.” This grotesque offer appeared last week on a new website taking aim at members of the UCLA faculty. The site, created by the Bruin Alumni Assn., a group founded by 2003 UCLA graduate Andrew Jones, offers differing bounties for class notes, handouts and illicit recordings of lectures ($100 for all three). | story Advertisement Elsewhere: . First of all, I didn’t even know that this group existed until a couple days ago. After reading many comments, I decided to take a close look at the website. As a UCLA alum, I beleive that everyone is making far too big a deal out of this. You can’t sya that he shuold be prosecuted for exercizing hi right to free speech. He is allowed to voice a concern if he beleives that professors are silencing views that contradict their own. As a professor myself, I beleive that it is impossible to illiminate ones point of view when we enter the classroom, so it is important to allow students to critically think and analyze what we say. If you are going to claim that Bush is the worst president in history, that is okay so long as the students are allowed to challenge this beleif and explain why you are wrong. Also, it is intelecutally dishonest to say that the BAA is acting like NAZI sympathizers, and mimicing Gestappo tactics. They have a point of view you don’t agree with. Okay, big deal. Explain why they are wrong. Are some of their claims unsubstanciated? Do they take evidence too far? Criticize them, but don’t resort to childish ad hominem fallacies. I, like most people, get turned off by people throwing around NAZI comparsions since they are only valid on rare ocasions. I want to make one final point, don’t be so quick to come to the rescue of so many of you colleagues. You are not in the classrooms with them. I am not saying they are all radical, only a few are. But I agree with profesor Schwartz, who spoke with the Daily Bruin. They report: “Political science Professor Thomas Schwartz is one of the four UCLA professors who has joined the associations advisory board. Schwartz, a lifelong Republican who taught in Texas before coming to Los Angeles, met Jones when he was a student, and the two had talks about their shared concerns on politics and education. Schwartz doesnt share Jones particularly strong views on how political bias impacts UCLA, and he said he cant substantiate all of Jones allegations against the university. But he does feel at times there is a skewing of the curriculum in a left-wing direction. He says Jones group might be a good step toward rectifying a perceived political imbalance at the university. Insofar as theres any voice that people hear that gets written up ... its almost entirely a left-leaning voice, Schwartz said. And (Jones) wants to balance it. He wants to say, Heres a conservative and Republican voice, and I support that. If someone wants to start a contrary voice for Republicans on campus, thats great.

As a college educator and die-hard Bruin Alumn and I was absolutely horrified when a colleague showed me the website of Mr. Jones’ witchhunt.
Report thisI would love to assume that his intentions were merely to gain attention and notoriety, but I doubt it.
I can only hope that some legal action will be taken against him.

I wrote the following to Andrew Jones, the fascist who sponsors the website noted in the professor’s article:
Report this“Your website [bruinalumni.com] and what you have printed in it mirrors the psudo-sophistocated articles written by the Nazi sympathizers of pre- and post-Hitlarian Germany, the ones who stood on their feet and offered the Roman salute at Heidelberg when Adolf shrieked out in his characteristic manner, ‘We do not want intellectuals and academics coming from the classrooms! We want wolves!!’ (Raubtiere) Hitler and his elite Staufenschutz also profiled professors, intellectuals, and critics of the Nazi organization. Albert Einstein was among them. What you and your band of academic thugs are doing mimics the Nazi Gestappo tactics so perfectly that it makes me shudder in horror for this land, if in fact your kind are the ones who wish to replace justice with ideology and universal prosperity with favors for the wealthy and ‘correct thinkers.’ You and your kind take the fair face of justice from its neck and place a pusture there to replace it.” Allan Edwards
