And the White House spokesman, Tony Snow, asserted that Mr. Kerry’s speech “sort of fits a pattern” of criticizing American troops in Iraq. “This is an absolute insult, and I’m a little astonished that he didn’t figure it out already,” Mr. Snow said. “If I say something stupid, I apologize as quickly as possible.”
But if anyone should apologize, Mr. Kerry said, it is President Bush and his administration officials who started the ill-conceived war. He said his remarks, which he conceded were part of a “botched joke,” had been distorted and called the criticism directed at him the work of “assorted right-wing nut jobs and right-wing talk show hosts.”
“If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy,” Mr. Kerry said in a statement. “I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.”
“I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed-suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq,” Mr. Kerry went on. “It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.”
At a televised news conference today in Seattle, Mr. Kerry said he was “disgusted” by the Republican attacks, which he noted were coming at the end of a bloody month in Iraq. “Sadly, this is the best this administration can do,” he said.
Mr. Kerry did not mention Mr. McCain in his statement, although at the news conference he said Mr. McCain should seek an apology from President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney if he wants an apology from anyone.

Why dont thoses outraged by his comments ask Bush why his daughters have not enlisted--does that mean they are unpatriotic?.
All 5 of Winston Churchills children served during WWII.
This is such a stupid arguement.....Did LBJ send his daughters? Did Clinton send his daughter to Somalia.......Volunteer means volunteer. It doesn’t mean you only volunteer if your a Rep. President who sends the military to war.
This reminds me of Bill Mahers New Rules.
Here is my New Rule, dont call someone who served their country in Vietnam a traitor if you are not will to serve your country or send your own children into the current conflict

Just to add, if I’m allowed, to previous remarks: I hope all heard Olbermann this evening, as he lit into the Bushies as I don’t think he quite has before. Indeed, where IS the apology to troops from this damnable crew, who demonstrate everyday nothing but contempt for all but members of their oil-sodden class! I hope TD will post Olbermann’s scathing demand for an apology from Bush, and that after reading or hearing all will write Olbermann at “countdown@msnbc.com” to send him some love. Olbermann is the ONLY one in mainstream media to be putting morality ahead of his career, in case anyone thinks his job isn’t likely in danger (recalling MSNBC’s unceremonious dismissal of Donohue). Send him your regards, your words of appreciation. Better yet, send remarks to MSNBC management, lest you discover Keith no longer there before much longer.

Someone made the statement the Dems have no answers either, but since the GOP has no answer to the ending of the war, why not let the Dems in, after all this administration did more than go to war, the surplus is gone, the “Don’t increase taxes is really don’t take away the tax break for the well to do”, to lead this country way to the right about gay marriage and abortion is like putting the head in the sand when there are more important issues facing this country, of course abortion should never have been the hands of government and the issue of gay marriage could be left to the individual states because they are the government that hands out marriage certificates. To go to the base may be important but also to keep the country is also important, what good is life if we are all led by an idea that most of the poeple do not go by. After all not everyone is overly religious, and religion is also political.

Senator Kerry is an idiot.
He offered just the right phrase, taken out of context as Republicans joyously do, that sounds like he’s dissing the troops. Rather like his flip-flop phrase going into 2004 election.
The reality is, Iraqi Vets are not Vietnam-era flunkies who couldn’t get education deferments from the Army draft - my neighbor served, he’s 40-something and he has a master’s degree - and EVERY ONE of the Iraqi Vets is a volunteer ... again, completely unlike Vietnam
when you give a public speech with media coverage, you ought consider how your remarks will be twisted by the other side. if you tend to kill jokes (as Kerry does) you shouldn’t put them in your speech at all. how flat is his learning curve?
Senator Kerry really is well-meaning, I’m convinced, but he is a true world-class light-weight when it comes to political phrasing, and he’d do democrats and the nation a favor if he’d just go hide on a wind-board until November 8th
now the radio/CNN/Fox spin is all about Kerry instead of the War In Iraq, Budget Disaster in the US, and unconstitutional power-grabbing by the executive branch of Bush/Cheney

But at least he can acknowledge when he’s made a mistake and his mistake, while it may have hurt the feelings of those who didn’t hear the whole story, or offended those who chose to misunderstand, DID NOT kill anyone. Clinton, as mentioned below, was a draft-dodger, and a Democrat. Also of interest, he was against the war in Vietnam. So, like quite a few others, he found a way to stay safe. I was against the war too. But like John Kerry, I went anyway; and, like John Kerry, I made sure I was in a combat role (Huey Crew-chief, 1st Cav). So I understand the ambiguity of his experience. The bottom line for me is, he was there, whatever the uncertainties of his role as put forward by Republicain-paid ‘informers’. The Republicains also managed to buy some unflattering testimony as to Senator McCain’s service. What they cannot buy is their own absence from history. Bush (the younger) was in favor of the war in Vietnam. Where was he during those long years? As far as I know, Colin Powell was the only member of this administration who ever exposed his ass to combat; and Colin Powell was also the only member of the administration to question the program of Rumsfield and the neo-conservative clique. So, after being roundly humiliated—obliged to defend the entry into war before the UN, armed with the shoddiest of dossiers.
No one who was not there can have anything whatsoever to say about those who were. We certainly don’t all have the same reading of our experience. But we were there, whatever our beliefs. Those who weren’t ... well let me say, those who weren’t do not surprise me by their lack of pudeur. I wouldn’t expect (or desire) any respect from this sort of individual.

Where I tend to disagree is that I don’t think our “salvation” lies with most incumbants. I wonder if it is even remotely possible that any wise, sympathetic person could represent us in government without him/herself soon becoming arrogant and corrupt. Maybe term limits are the answer. There has to be a place in a democracy for people of reason and wisdom to legislate and who put the needs of their constituentcy ahead of their own or of the rich. And I think there is no shortage of smart, principled people in non-rich classes in America who could do the job quite well. Many of them read Truthdig. R. Roth

We live in a country which is in a state of denial, about a number of issues. We have a president who lied, and sent our troops off to be killed in Iraq. But no apology or accountability has been demanded by many Americans, for the actions of Bush. Then along comes John Kerry and speaks the truth on a subject that most of us say in our minds, but do not speak out loud. And that is that the military is the only opportunity for educational advancement for thousands and thousands of our kids. The second truth is that many in power purposefully keep it that way, by not making college affordable, so that thousands and thousands are required to turn to the military for those opportunities. Why does not someone question this administration as to why they are now trying to out source our killing by giving those from India the fast track to eligibility in America if they will agree to go into the military? So much to clean up in America. So very, very much!

WHAT HAPPENED TO LIARS & LIES REGARDING “WMD”?
Our current US administration has us in this disaster & terrible war in Iraq that is draining America dry for “Israel’s Strategic Objectives.”
Yes, its all for Israel!!! This administration’s staff & foreign policy team are a gang of liars.
Bush, Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld and the gang of Zionist Jews at the Pentagon (Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Eliot Abrams, William Kristol, David Wurmser, Ari Fleischer, Scooter Libby, Michael Chertoff & more lied about Iraq and its WMD’s.
Look at where we are right now. We are in a disaster, chaos, destruction called the Iraq war. Look at how many innocent civilian lives have been killed in the past 3.5 years. Look at how many US military deaths, almost 3000, and over 20,000 injured.
The Iraq war is costing the US taxpayers about $10 billion dollars a month. So far it has cost us over $350 billion dollars & no close end in site.
All for because of the above mentioned liars & lies. Where are the “WMD’s”? Why are the liars immune from the outrage of the American people.
Where are the liars, Zionist Jews, of the Pentagon working now? They are not in the Pentagon; they have slipped out under the cover of darkness. They have accomplished their objectives. Send Americans to Iraq...for lies about WMD’s. The liars are getting richer & have prestigious jobs & positions. Why are they no accountable for their damn lies?
Most Americans don’t know these facts:
- Which country in the Middle-East has secret undeclared Nuclear Weapons?
- Which country in the Middle-East has undeclared stopiles of Chemical & Biological weapons?
- Which country in the Middle-East has no outside inspections of its nuclear & chemical facilities/factories?
- Which country in the Middle-East has kidnapped & jailed its whistle blower, Mordechai Vanunu?
IT IS NOT IRAQ!!! IT IS NOT IRAN!!!
You might have guessed it...ITS ISRAEL!!!
How come that we never hear about Israel’s “WMD’s” on our zionist controlled mainstream US news media?
Why are the American people letting our damn liars off the hook?
Lets bring our troops home & end this disaster. Lets remind the liars of their evil deeds & intensions.
Lets Vote the liars out of office!!!

I listened to Kerry’s initiating remarks on TV, and had a different take from anything I’ve read about them by everyone including himself!. I heard no “botched joke,” let alone what the rabid reactionary right-wing rhetoric claims. He didn’t say that the U.S. military consists of educational failures. What I heard (even after several hearings) was that educational failures (for lack of decent employment prospects on the home front) would likely end up in the military along with all the others who may very well be educationally and otherwise successful, and are serving out of free, positive, and patriotic choice. I heard from Kerry an admonition to his listeners to “stay the course” in school, lest they end up, willy-nilly, as canon fodder in our little hand-picked War of the Worlds.
What a strange double-exposure and deja vu that once again, on some flimsy, high-sounding pretext from those in power, Daddy Warbucks (the Shadow of Uncle Sam) rakes in millions while brave and idealistic youth, the best of our nation, “die like dogs” on foreign shores. As we really know, peace begins within where truth may be heard.

The fact of the matter is that what Kerry said is true. Many kids who don’t have the opportunity, the grades, or the money to attend college are wooed into the military as an alternative career path, so they do, in fact, wind up in Iraq...doing the bidding of an administration, an administration which doesn’t send it’s own children to fight. If this was such a righteous war, such as World War 2, they would send their own, but not to Iraq. I am only wondering when the Republicans will finally figure out that there is nothing more for our soldier to do there. As it now stands, they are simply targets in a foreign land with no defined objectives.

I have noticed that time and time again when Bush’s policies are attacked that he hides behind the troops and insinuates that the critic is attacking the troops (rather than his policies). He is too cowardly to stand up for his policies on his own. Finally Kerry has called him on it ... yet the press did not report it specifically.
Of course Bush knew the true intent of Kerry’s words ... anyone would who listened to the content; not just the soundbite of the TV news. By purposefully mis-interpreting them, Bush himself (and others who repeated the manipulated story) insulted the troops, not Kerry. Bush thinks that this is a game .. he does not care if the troops are harmed by this political ploy. Bush is the one who should apologize. We should demand it. Call him on it ...make him accountable for once!

All day today I saw the old John Kerry at a stump speech looking tired and fumbleing for words, trying to be funny and hip before a crowd but his last zinger was so convoluted that when he finally got to the end and no one laughed, he didn’t have a clue. You know the old saw about putting a frog in cold water and bringing it to a boil? Put Kerry in with the frog and the frog would survive. He’d jump out before he got bored to death. And ten minutes Later Kerry would be saying “Huh? Where’d that frog go?”

Kerry tells the truth, what’s wrong with that and why would he apologize for it?
Bush and company didn’t tell the truth and launched war on false pretense. It’s bush and company that needs to apologize to the world.

Could the greatest fiction writer in the world create from imagination a more bizzare party than todays democrats? What could you possibly add to make these people come off as more anti American? Comments like Kerrys at somebody’s funeral or something?
Oh wait....

I have a child in the military and I was not a Kerry fan, only voted for him because WTH was the alternative but...I’m a fan now or at least starting to be.
He did not insult service people. He told a group of young people the %%&%# truth, this administration would love to use you as cannon fodder so be careful what you do.
As for his remarks re: Limpdork, you go John. Tell that useless pile of pig feces to step off.

It’s true, is it not, that a large number of Americans fighting in Iraq to protect the interests of America’s rich come from families that live at or below poverty level or who otherwise have relatively few career options? Remember the ad where the young Afro-American tells his Mom he’s found someone to pay for his college education? The U.S. Army. I have a dream: People who really care about our democracy and the non-rich 95% of us finally realize that we have the power to make America our own and we don’t need self-serving, ignorant, arrogant, pilfering, professional Republican or Democrat attorneys determining our future. People have to learn to listen, think for themselves, filter out bullshit, and, above, remember the past. America has got to stop making war and start addressing the growing crises at home: poverty, health, education and an energy policy that eliminates dependence on foreign sources. What of those have our elected officials addressed? But $400 or $500 billion to protect the interests of America’s wealthy? No problem. They vote Yea with the right hand while the left is accepting a favor from a lobbyist.

Keep it up Democrats—outraged truth telling is what people are hungry for. Let’s go, now’s the time. Keep filling the vacuum of empty attacks and misleading statements with righeous anger! Lead us, war heroes. Lead us, hereoes of the common man. Kerry, Edwards, Obama, whomever, grab the mantle—It’s lying at yor feet. Raise it high. Do not compromise. Get to work, GODDAMNIT!

Frankly I’m tired of these self-righteous, self-indulgent, and most likely made for the media Punch & Judy side shows. Nearly 3000 US service personnel have lost their lives, and thousands more have had their lives irrevocably diminished with permanent injuries and disabilities, all due to the lies concocted by the Bush administration, and by the utter lack of courage and conviction, not to mention the stupidity and complicity, of anyone in Congress who voted in support of the Iraq invasion and who didn’t challenge the Bush administration on each and every one of its patently bogus assertions. Kerry, and others who side with him in this latest example of pointless theater, is more than three years late in what he had to say, so the much ado about nothing rhetoric goes on as one of the worst months for casualties since the invasion comes to an end.

If - as seems likely - Kerry’s comment has to be responded to, let the local candidates do it. Kerry can’t. Better someone else defend him than he does it himself - he is constitutionally incapable of conveying enough sincerity to make an apology or a counterattack believable.

The only way the democrats win and stay in power is to call the Bush adminstration on the lies and deception that led us into this war in the first place. Bill Clinton fought back on fox news. And John Kerry finally found his balls two years later. The only apology that is needed is one from Bush Cheney and the rest of his cronies who led us in to this fiasco.

I think its good that he’s standing up for himself, democrats don’t do nearly enough of that even in the face of ludicrous and false Republican claims. But I think it would be even better for the democrats if he just talked less, I mean the timing of this is crazy, he must have known that kind of comment would raise a stink, why not wait until next week?
And I don’t think he should avoid apologizing because the republicans are purposely misinterpretting his statement. I think he meant what he said. Because its true. The american military is made up overwhelming of the poor often from minority groups. Why is that? Why are the powers that be, including the entire middle class, so willing to go to war and yet so unwilling to send their own children? If none of your reprsentatives in congress have children in the military and very few have ever served, what right do they have to send others to die? Even if the war is justified.
I think america very much needs the debate Kerry was alluding to, but it can’t, because no one even wants to acknowledge the problem since its seen as an insult to the troops.

After seeing this I am reminded he had one of the most dangerous jobs in the Viet Nam war and showed a lot of courage doing it. Too bad he didn’t show the same fortitude in the failed election 2004. Maybe now his words will encourage other demopublicans to stand up to this bunch of jackal fascists.
Well done, Skipper!

Good for John Kerry, who’s finally said in plain terms what Democratic Party leaders (Hillary?) and so-called strategists are still too frightened to say. Speaking of perons STILL in need of spine implants! Instead of following Kerry’s lead, they’re doing that back-pedaling thing they do so well. That thing that allows the terror-mongering Republican attack machine to go on doing what it does so well, and which costs the Dems election after election. First Gore, now Kerry, both speaking up too late, thanks to Democratic Party strategists who think the road to victory is paved with never taking a discernable stand on any issue whatsoever. Hell, even Republicans know THAT doesn’t work, which is one reason they’re in control--knowing as they know that it matters not if they lie through their teeth, but exactly that they can get away with doing so because the opposition has no teeth at all.

Truly amazing to see a democrat responding to a GOP attack with any kind of muscle. Methinks the donkeys are not going to be told what to do any more. About time someone called Bush a liar.
Report thisStill, it’s the sort of massive howler that the GOP has been praying for for weeks now, especially after Mr Fox gave that perfect interview. They will run this one into the ground until Kerry mucks up the next one. What a loose cannon.
