As part of its bid to recapture the Congress, the Democratic Party has backed a number of candidates who skew to the right on issues like abortion, gun control and gay rights.
New York Times:
One such candidate, Heath Shuler, was courted by Republicans to run for office in 2001. Mr. Shuler, 34, is a retired National Football League quarterback who is running in the 11th Congressional District in North Carolina. He is an evangelical Christian and holds fast to many conservative social views, like opposition to abortion rights.
“My guess is that if Democrats are in the majority, it’s going to be because of these New Democrat, Blue Dog candidates out there winning in these competitive swing districts,” Representative Ron Kind of Wisconsin, co-chairman of a caucus of centrist House Democrats, said in an interview.
But if candidates like Mr. Shuler do help the Democrats gain majority control of Congress, it could come at a political price, which may include tensions in the party between its new centrists and its more liberal political base.
While Democratic leaders have gone to great lengths to promote the views of these candidates, some, like Mr. Shuler, have views on issues like gun control and abortion that are far out of step with the prevailing views of the Democrats who control the party. On some issues, they may even be expected to side with Republicans and the Bush White House.

Divine Right of Kings.
Rather than implementing commonsense measures to prevent corruption, the Bush regime and Republican dominated congress has aggressively used intimidation and deceit to ram through regulations and laws that actually do the opposite. Is this due to stupidity and incompetence, or criminal intent?
Consider for a moment that when congress has failed to pass legislation to achieve the rabid rights agenda, Bush has issued orders to his political appointees in every agency of the Federal government, to implement regulations by Executive Decree. Regulations dont abrogate laws passed by congress, but Bush has effectively short-circuited Congressional oversight by assuming dictatorial powers. While those who have bestowed on Bush the Divine Right of Kings, have no problem with this, half the population has been stripped of their rights in the process.

Interesting that gun control and abortion trump an illegal invasion, six hundred thousand dead Iraqi men, women, and children, the abolition of the bill of rights, tax cuts for oil companies, cuts for school lunches, and cuts for veteran health benefits, and the felony of lying to Congress.
Report thisAll the evangelicals are not as brain dead as Falwell and his ilk. There are many smart, compassionate, truly Christian folks among them.
Of course, the mainstream media doesn’t want to know this.
What betrays the treacherous evangelicals is simple: Jesus is a liberal.

What a load of shit. So now the Democrats are giving up on the liberal values of their core to kiss the ass of right wingers? I can’t believe it. Sorry, but I won’t vote for any anti-choice, bigoted candidate from the Democratic party. I hope this strategy backfires. At least the Republicans are honest about their sexism and bigotry.

By latching onto well-tried republican issues, the democrats have shown the lack of well-though-out programs on which to build a constituency. Sadly enough, this will cost them, once again, the control of congress the country needs and move us all even deeper into the one-party system we are developing. No wonder so many of us feel so hopeless.

What some fail to remember is that a true Liberal doesn’t lock him/herself into a specific ideological stance. Most true Liberals can compromise on same sex marriage ( civil unions are fine as the NJ Court has stated), abortion (but certainly not of a healthy fetus in the last trimester), gun control ( local ordinances as NYC’s hand gun laws and restrictions on assault weapons and weapons possession by felons). Liberals, unlike Conservatives, don’t believe that anyone is an absolute authority in anything. Liberals make very poor followers, that is why the left is so factional.

As a fierce “Independent” I could care less whether a candidate uses the “democrat"label or the “republican” label and I sense more and more Americans are starting to feel this way. I honestly can’t tell the difference anymore BOTH seem simply to have SOLD OUT to the highest bidder.
What I’m looking for as a voter is who is going to uphold ALL of the Bill of Rights and guarantee ALL of the access to Justice and Liberty and defend The Republic that we as Americans SWEAR ALLEGIANCE to with every Pledge. Clearly, IMO the Bush/Cheney Crime Family has failed miserably, selling out to the Elitists and anti-Constitutional Police State mentality advocates, but it has been aided and abetted by MANY who call themselves “democrats”. I want a candidate who upholds the 2nd amd. as well as the 1st and the 4th etc. and Democrats had best learn many swing voters will never support a candidate who would attempt to deprive them of the God given right of self protection and try and diminish their right of gun ownership.
