‘Bridge to Nowhere’ Still Planned

Bridge to Nowhere
From sensesofcinema.com

Remember that $223-million bridge to Gravina, Alaska (pop. 50)? It’s in the current federal highway bill. Just a friendly reminder of the priorities of Alaska GOP Rep. Donald Young.

Bloomberg:

Alaska’s Gravina Island is home to 50 people and more than 350 Sitka black-tailed deer. Under the U.S. highway bill passed last month, this group will get a $223 million bridge taller than the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

The funding is among $1.04 billion that Alaska lawmakers secured for transportation projects, making the state the envy of its neighbors in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The states of Washington and Oregon, with a combined population 15 times that of Alaska’s 650,000, each received about $500 million sought by lawmakers for transportation projects in their home states under the bill signed by President George W. Bush on Aug. 10.

Alaska owes its bounty to Congressman Donald Young, a Republican who heads the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation Committee and has told voters he used his position to enhance Alaska’s share. A second bridge, spanning 2 miles in Anchorage, to be called ``Don Young’s Way,’’ got $229 million.

Sounds like Young wants to join his republican buddies in prison.

They’re all pure until they discover they can vote money for themselves.

Once again the Republicans show their true colors, yet noone does a thing to stop it.  And did you notice the yawning silence about this on the TV news shows?  Lots of talk about Foley, and the ‘unsubstantiated’ terrorist threats to NFL stadiums - boy, that couldn’t be a Rovian ploy, could it? Rattle the fear closet just before the election…..nah.  When the upcoming election, which poll after poll shows should be a big win for Dems, ends up being another “mandate” for Republicans - will the American people finally rise up and say “NO MORE”?  Or are we truly the frightened and easily manipulated sheep that we’re accused of being?  There are so many verifiable incidents of voting fraud, intimidation, illegal dumping of eligible voters from the rolls, and on and on - how can the media continue to say that they present truth or anything even close to ‘fair and balanced’? So, if the media are so obviously bought, blackmailed or whatever, how do we find the truth?  How does a citizenry take back their nation when the elections are rigged?  I can’t believe this is America - it sounds like Peru or Rwanda - some place where Jimmy Carter’s group should be monitoring the elections - Say!  There’s an idea!  Jimmy - help us out!  We’ve become a 3rd world country with rigged elections and a fraudulent government that tortures, steals, attacks innocents, imprisons its own citizens without trial, ignores the Geneva Conventions - what’s it gonna take before someone with clout and integrity finally stands up?  I know, no one wants to be shot, or swift-boated, but it’s our patriotic duty now, because these criminals are destroying every American ideal and tradition, right before our eyes.  And unless a LOT of people start seriously protesting and demanding investigations and honest answers - then we are complicit in the destruction of our wonderful American heritage of the ideals of individual freedom and the right to question and even shitcan our ‘elected’ officials - OOPS!!  I’m an enemy combatant now - oh well, the gulags will be full of articulate, intelligent people, anyway.  What a sad end to the American Experiment in Democracy.
