silicone implants
From CNN

Lifesavers, apparently.

AP:

A woman in the northern Bulgarian town of Ruse survived a car crash thanks to her silicone breasts which acted as an airbag, a newspaper has reported.

The 24-year-old ran through a red light and crashed her car into another vehicle at a busy crossroad in the middle of town Saturday, the daily Standart said.

“The two cars were crumpled past recognition in the crash but the woman’s silicone breasts acted as airbags and saved her life,” Standart wrote, citing eyewitness reports.

Urban legend alert! I haven’t checked Snopes on this, but it doesn’t ring true.

First red flag: occurs in an obscure corner of Eastern Europe. Urban legends are often set in places where the facts are hard to check, like Indonesia, Central Asia or other areas out of the mainstream.

Two: Think about the physiology of this. Fake boobs saved her life? Breast implants are small, about the size of fluid-filled baggies. How much impact could they absorb? Enough to save a life? Plus they’re on the chest, and most fatal complications from car crashes are due to head trauma.

I don’t doubt there was some sort of motor vehicle accident in this Bulgarian town. But silicone life-savers seems over-inflated (pun intended.) Do you wonder whether you’ve been scammed, Truthdig?
